Members of this family are primarily coastal, inhabiting upper intertidal and supratidal zones of rocky shores. The genus Deto includes species with complex taxonomic histories and documented cases of cryptic diversity, such as Deto echinata in southern Africa.

Dichrorampha
Dichrorampha is a genus of small tortricid moths in the subfamily Olethreutinae, comprising over 100 described species distributed across Europe, Asia, and North America. The genus includes both diurnal and crepuscular species, many associated with mountain and alpine habitats. Several species have been investigated as biological control agents for invasive weeds, including D. aeratana for oxeye daisy and D. odorata for Chromolaena odorata. Dinacoma sanfelipe
Dinacoma sanfelipe is a melolonthine scarab beetle endemic to southern California, described in 2020 as the first new species in the genus in 90 years. The genus Dinacoma is restricted to California and contains cryptic species that are difficult to distinguish. One congener (D. caseyi) is federally listed under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, and all known species in the genus may be of conservation concern.

Diodontus
Diodontus is a genus of solitary aphid-hunting wasps in the family Crabronidae (subfamily Pemphredoninae). Species are distributed across Europe, Africa, and North America. The genus includes cryptic species that can be morphologically nearly identical but ecologically differentiated, as demonstrated by D. argillicola and D. tristis, which are separated primarily by nesting substrate preference (clay versus sand) rather than visible morphology. Females construct nest tunnels in soil or substrate and provision them with paralyzed aphids as larval food.

Disholcaspis prehensa is a gall-inducing cynipid wasp native to California that induces distinctive galls on scrub oak and leather oak. The species exhibits heterogony, alternating between sexual and asexual generations that produce two morphologically different gall types. The asexual generation forms conspicuous mushroom-shaped twig galls with clasping bases, while the sexual generation produces small, hidden bud galls.
