Acentria ephemerella

Acentria ephemerella is an aquatic moth in the family Crambidae, notable as the only moth with females that remain fully aquatic throughout their entire adult lives. The species exhibits extreme sexual dimorphism: most females are brachypterous (short-winged and flightless) with swimming adaptations including additional hairs on their legs, while males have fully developed wings and live only 1-2 days solely for breeding. Native to Europe and now established in North America, this species has gained attention as a biological control agent for invasive aquatic plants, particularly Eurasian watermilfoil (Myriophyllum spicatum).

Anisoptera is the suborder of dragonflies, distinguished from damselflies (Zygoptera) by their larger, stouter bodies, eyes that touch or nearly touch at the top of the head, and wings held horizontally away from the body at rest. The name derives from Greek roots meaning 'unequal wings,' referring to the broader hindwings compared to forewings. With over 3,000 described species globally, dragonflies represent one of the most ancient lineages of flying insects, with fossil relatives dating to the Triassic Period 250 million years ago. Adults are aerial predators with exceptional flight capabilities and vision, while larvae are aquatic predators found in diverse freshwater habitats.

Chironomidae is a large family of non-biting midges with over 10,000 described species globally. Adults are frequently mistaken for mosquitoes due to their similar body shape, but they lack wing scales and piercing mouthparts. The family exhibits remarkable ecological versatility, with larvae inhabiting diverse aquatic and terrestrial environments from Antarctic glaciers to tropical lakes. Males possess distinctive plumose antennae. Larvae of some species contain hemoglobin analogs that produce bright red coloration, earning them the common name 'bloodworms.'

Cladocera is a suborder of small crustaceans commonly known as water fleas, ranging from 0.2–6 mm in size. They are found in freshwater environments worldwide, including rivers, lakes, swamps, and temporary pools, with some species inhabiting brackish water, groundwater, and even leaf axils or caves. These organisms play a central role in freshwater food webs as filter-feeders that consume phytoplankton, bacteria, and organic particles, while serving as essential prey for fish fry and predatory insect larvae. Their sensitivity to environmental changes makes them valuable bioindicators for water quality assessment.

Crustacea is a major subphylum of arthropods encompassing approximately 67,000 described species, with estimates suggesting this represents only 1-10% of actual diversity. The group includes familiar aquatic forms such as crabs, lobsters, shrimp, krill, and barnacles, as well as terrestrial representatives like woodlice. Crustaceans are united by biramous (two-parted) limbs and characteristic larval development, often involving a nauplius stage. Current phylogenetic understanding places Crustacea as paraphyletic with respect to Hexapoda (insects and allies), with both groups now combined in the clade Pancrustacea. The subphylum exhibits extraordinary morphological diversity, ranging from the 100-micrometer Stygotantulus stocki to the Japanese spider crab with a 3.8-meter leg span.

Two subspecies are recognized: D. g. galeata in the Old World and D. g. mendotae in North America, with hybrid populations occurring in the lower Great Lakes. It serves as a key model organism for studying predator-induced defenses and life-history evolution in aquatic systems.

The species exhibits heterogony, alternating between sexual and asexual generations that produce two morphologically different gall types. The asexual generation forms conspicuous mushroom-shaped twig galls with clasping bases, while the sexual generation produces small, hidden bud galls.
