Agonum belleri
Beller's Ground Beetle
Agonum belleri is a flightless ground beetle endemic to Pacific Northwest wetlands. It is metallic-black with copper, blue, or green reflections. The species is restricted to sphagnum bogs and associated wetlands in Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia. It is listed as endangered by the Xerces Society and a species of greatest conservation need in Washington due to habitat loss from peat mining and development.
Anaea troglodyta floridalis
Florida Leafwing
Anaea troglodyta floridalis is a federally endangered subspecies of butterfly endemic to southern Florida. It is one of the most imperiled butterflies in North America, with populations restricted to pine rockland and tropical hardwood hammock habitats in Miami-Dade County and Everglades National Park. The subspecies is highly dependent on its host plant Croton linearis for larval development. Habitat loss, fragmentation, and fire suppression have contributed to its decline, with remaining populations concentrated in protected areas.
Analetris
Analetris is a genus of sand-dwelling mayflies in the family Acanthametropodidae, established by Edmunds in 1972. The genus contains at least two species: the extant Analetris eximia and the extinct †Analetris secundus. Members of this genus are specialized inhabitants of riverine environments with unstable silty substrates. The best-studied species, A. eximia, is considered endangered due to habitat destruction from reservoir construction.
Apodrepanulatrix liberaria
New Jersey tea inchworm, Barrens Carpet
A small geometrid moth with a wingspan of 25–35 mm, found in eastern North America. The species is notable for its specialized larval diet on New Jersey tea (Ceanothus americanus) and its endangered status in Massachusetts and Connecticut. Adults are active during the growing season, with larvae feeding on a single host plant genus.
Atrytone arogos
Arogos Skipper, Beard-grass Skipper
Atrytone arogos, commonly known as the Arogos Skipper or Beard-grass Skipper, is an endangered butterfly in the family Hesperiidae. The species consists of two subspecies: the nominate A. a. arogos and A. a. iowa. It is native to grassland ecosystems of the eastern and midwestern United States, where it has experienced significant population declines due to habitat destruction and poor adaptability to environmental change.
Bagoinae
Bagoinae is a subfamily of weevils (Curculionidae) containing the genus Bagous and related genera. Members are primarily associated with aquatic and semi-aquatic habitats, though some occupy terrestrial environments. The group has been variously classified, with some treatments placing it within Molytinae. The subfamily includes approximately 130 species in the Palaearctic region, with the genus Bagous distributed globally except Central and South America.
Batrisodes venyivi
Helotes Mold Beetle
Batrisodes venyivi, commonly known as the Helotes Mold Beetle, is a small, eyeless troglobitic beetle in the family Staphylinidae. It is endemic to eight caves in Bexar County, Texas, and was listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in 2000. The species exhibits classic cave-adapted traits including elongated antennae, legs, and sensory setae. Very little is known about its behavior, population trends, or life history due to the logistical challenges of accessing its subterranean habitat.
Blattellinae
wood cockroaches
Blattellinae is a subfamily of Ectobiidae containing approximately 70 genera. It includes the globally distributed German cockroach (Blattella germanica), a major household pest, as well as several endangered species such as those in Hololeptoblatta and Miriamrothschildia. The subfamily exhibits diverse ecological adaptations, with members occupying habitats ranging from wetlands and grasslands to caves and human dwellings.
Blissus occiduus
Western Chinch Bug
Blissus occiduus, the western chinch bug, is a phloem-feeding true bug (Hemiptera: Blissidae) that is a significant pest of warm-season turfgrasses, particularly buffalograss and zoysiagrass. The species exhibits strong host preference hierarchies, with buffalograss being the most preferred host followed by zoysiagrass, though it can survive and reproduce on a broad range of grasses including agronomic crops. Field studies have documented inconsistent control with neonicotinoid insecticides, with thiamethoxam showing particularly rapid degradation in buffalograss tissues compared to imidacloprid and clothianidin.

crotchii
Crotch's bumble bee, Golden State bumble bee, Crotch's bumblebee
Bombus crotchii, commonly called Crotch's bumble bee or the Golden State bumble bee, is a short- to medium-tongue bumble bee endemic to California and adjacent regions. The species is classified as endangered under the California Endangered Species Act and listed as imperiled globally by the IUCN. It has experienced severe population declines attributed to habitat loss, pesticide exposure, climate change, and inbreeding depression. The species is a dietary generalist and important pollinator of native plants and agricultural crops.
Bombus distinguendus
Great Yellow Bumble Bee, great yellow bumblebee
Bombus distinguendus, the great yellow bumblebee, is a bumblebee species with a Palearctic distribution spanning northern and central Europe, northern Russia, and Alaska. The species has experienced significant population declines across much of its European range, with critically low numbers or local extinction in several regions. In Ireland, it is classified as Endangered and restricted to a single remaining population in the northwest. The species exhibits late-season phenology compared to other bumblebees and shows strong foraging preferences for specific plant species, particularly Common Knapweed (Centaurea nigra) in Irish populations.
Bombus franklini
Franklin's bumble bee, Franklin's bumblebee
Bombus franklini is a critically endangered bumble bee species with the most restricted range of any bumble bee in the world, confined to a 13,300-square-mile area spanning five counties in southern Oregon and northern California. The species has not been observed since 2006, despite intensive monitoring by entomologist Robbin Thorp from 1998 until his death in 2019. Listed as endangered under the U.S. Endangered Species Act in 2021, it is feared extinct due to severe population decline from an estimated 94 individuals in 1998 to zero confirmed sightings since 2006. Genomic research indicates long-term population decline driven by bottlenecks and environmental stressors rather than pathogens alone.
Bombus fraternus
Southern Plains bumblebee
Bombus fraternus, commonly called the Southern Plains bumblebee, is a large bumblebee species native to the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. It is classified in the subgenus Cullumanobombus and is currently listed as endangered, with estimated abundance below 15% of historical numbers. The species is distinguished by its mostly black coloration with yellow thoracic and abdominal bands and unusually flattened abdominal hairs.
Bombus occidentalis
Western bumble bee, white-bottomed bee
Bombus occidentalis, the western bumble bee, is a medium to large bumble bee species native to western North America. Once among the most common bumble bees in its range, it has experienced severe population declines since the late 1990s, with losses exceeding 40% in some areas and near-disappearance from parts of California, Oregon, and Washington. The species was listed as endangered under the California Endangered Species Act in 2019. It is a generalist forager and effective pollinator of crops including tomatoes, peppers, and berries through buzz pollination.
Bombus suckleyi
Suckley's Cuckoo Bumble Bee, Suckley's Bumble Bee
Bombus suckleyi is a cuckoo bumble bee (subgenus Psithyrus) and obligate social parasite of other Bombus species. It lacks corbiculae (pollen baskets) on its hind legs, having lost the ability to collect pollen and nectar for its own brood. The species invades host colonies, kills or subdues the resident queen, and manipulates host workers to provision its offspring. Native to northwestern North America, it has experienced severe population declines of approximately 77% and is classified as critically endangered by the IUCN and NatureServe.
Brychius
crawling water beetles
Brychius is a genus of small aquatic beetles in the family Haliplidae, commonly known as crawling water beetles. The genus comprises five recognized species distributed across parts of Europe and North America. One species, Brychius hungerfordi, is federally endangered in the United States. Members of this genus inhabit freshwater environments and are associated with aquatic vegetation.
Calephelis borealis
Northern Metalmark
Calephelis borealis, the northern metalmark, is a small butterfly in the family Riodinidae endemic to the eastern United States. It is one of few tropical-associated riodinids found in eastern North America. The species has declined across its range due to habitat loss from afforestation and invasive plant encroachment. Active management including canopy thinning and invasive plant removal has been shown to increase local populations.
Calephelis muticum
Swamp Metalmark
Calephelis muticum, known as the swamp metalmark, is a small riodinid butterfly with a restricted distribution across wetlands of the upper Midwest, Ohio Valley, Ozark Mountains, and parts of Arizona. The species is globally vulnerable (G3) and endangered in Illinois, with small, isolated colonies scattered across ten states. It is distinguished from the northern metalmark (Calephelis borealis) by habitat preference, wing morphology, and host plant associations. Conservation concerns center on habitat loss from wetland conversion, invasive species, pesticides, and fire suppression.

poweshiek
Poweshiek Skipperling
The Poweshiek skipperling is a small, critically endangered North American grass skipper butterfly. Historically common across tallgrass prairie systems of the upper Midwest United States and southern Manitoba, Canada, it has experienced catastrophic population declines since 2005. The species now persists at only six verified extant sites: four prairie fens in Michigan, one mesic prairie in Wisconsin, and one tallgrass prairie in Manitoba. Intensive conservation efforts include captive breeding programs at the Minnesota Zoo and Assiniboine Park Conservancy, federal endangered species protection in both countries, and habitat restoration initiatives.
Ormosia
Ormosias, horse-eye beans, chocho
Ormosia is a genus of woody legumes (Fabaceae) comprising approximately 130 species of trees and large shrubs distributed across tropical regions of the Americas, Asia, and New Guinea. The genus is characterized by distinctive, often brightly colored seeds with decorative patterns that resemble eyes—commonly called "horse-eye beans"—which are poisonous if ingested but valued for ornamental use. Several species are threatened by habitat destruction, with Ormosia howii likely extinct. The genus forms nitrogen-fixing root nodules with rhizobia and exhibits strong adaptability to nutrient-poor soils.
Osmia calaminthae
blue calamintha bee
Osmia calaminthae is a rare mason bee endemic to a restricted area of Florida scrub habitat. The species was described in 2011 and is known from only eleven sites concentrated in the southern Lake Wales Ridge and Ocala National Forest. It exhibits striking blue coloration and shows extreme host specialization, depending primarily on two mint-family plants for pollen. The species is considered Critically Imperiled due to its extremely limited range, specific habitat requirements, and ongoing threats from development and pesticide exposure. It was rediscovered in March 2020 after concerns about its continued existence.
Papaipema eryngii
Rattlesnake-master Borer Moth
Papaipema eryngii is a noctuid moth whose larvae are specialized stem borers of the rattlesnake master (Eryngium yuccifolium). The species has a restricted range in the central United States, tied to the distribution of its host plant. It is the only member of its genus known to have adapted to the defensive chemistry of this particular host. The species is listed as endangered in Illinois and was the subject of a declined federal protection petition in 2020.
Papaipema marginidens
brick-red borer moth, Wild Yam and Rattlesnake-master Borer Moths
Papaipema marginidens, known as the brick-red borer moth, is a noctuid moth native to eastern North America. It inhabits open oak woodlands and rocky barrens with herbaceous undergrowth, particularly near streams. The species is listed as endangered in Connecticut, reflecting habitat vulnerability in parts of its range.
Papilio aristodemus
Schaus' swallowtail, island swallowtail
Papilio aristodemus, commonly known as Schaus' swallowtail or island swallowtail, is a butterfly in the family Papilionidae endemic to southern Florida, the West Indies, and the Bahamas. It is one of North America's most endangered butterflies, with the Florida subspecies (P. a. ponceana, now Heraclides ponceana) listed as endangered since 1984. The species produces a single generation annually with adults active primarily in May and June. Habitat loss from urban development, hurricanes, and mosquito control spraying has caused dramatic population declines, including near-extinction from Hurricane Andrew in 1992.
Parvindela celeripes
Swift Tiger Beetle
Parvindela celeripes, the Swift Tiger Beetle, is a tiny (6–8 mm), flightless tiger beetle species native to the Great Plains of North America. Once abundant in native grasslands of Iowa, Nebraska, and Kansas during the late 1800s and early 1900s, the species has experienced severe population declines due to habitat loss. It was unknown from Missouri until its discovery in 2010, where it persists in small, isolated loess hilltop prairie remnants. The species remains robust in northwestern Oklahoma's red clay/gypsum exposures, representing its most secure population. Its flightless nature makes recolonization of disturbed or burned sites extremely difficult.
Pentodontini
rhinoceros beetles
Pentodontini is the most diverse tribe within the subfamily Dynastinae (rhinoceros beetles), containing over 100 genera distributed across multiple biogeographic regions. Most genera are restricted to a single biogeographic region. The tribe is characterized by substantial morphological diversity, with generic-level identification often relying on mouthpart morphology in females and secondary sexual characters (horns, claw modifications, antennal club length) in males.

Phalangodid Harvestmen
Phalangodidae is a family of small harvestmen in the suborder Laniatores, containing approximately 30 genera and more than 100 described species. Members are characterized by pedipalps armed with prominent spines and body lengths generally under 3 mm. The family is primarily distributed in the Holarctic region, with exceptional diversity in the western Nearctic, particularly California. Several species, especially in the genus Texella, are obligate cave-dwellers exhibiting troglomorphic traits such as depigmentation and reduced eyes.
Phyllonorycter ledella
Labrador Tea Leaf Miner
Phyllonorycter ledella is a micro-moth in the family Gracillariidae, commonly known as the Labrador Tea Leaf Miner. It is a small leaf-mining species with a wingspan of 9–10 mm. The species has a disjunct distribution across North America and is listed as endangered in Connecticut.
Plebejus icarioides missionensis
Plebejus icarioides missionensis is a subspecies of the Mission blue butterfly, a federally endangered lycaenid butterfly endemic to a restricted range in coastal California. The subspecies is part of a complex that has been subject to taxonomic revision, with some authorities placing it in the genus Icaricia. Its habitat consists of coastal grasslands and scrub where its larval host plant, silver lupine (Lupinus albicaulis), occurs. The subspecies has been impacted by urban development, invasive plants, and fire suppression.
Plebejus melissa samuelis
Karner blue butterfly
Plebejus melissa samuelis, commonly known as the Karner blue butterfly, is a federally endangered subspecies first described by Vladimir Nabokov in 1944 from Karner, New York. It is highly specialized, with larvae feeding exclusively on wild lupine (Lupinus perennis) and inhabiting dry sandy barrens ecosystems. The subspecies produces two generations annually and has become a flagship for conservation efforts, particularly in Wisconsin where a pioneering statewide Habitat Conservation Plan was developed.
Pogonomyrmex comanche
Comanche harvester ant
Pogonomyrmex comanche, the Comanche harvester ant, is an endangered harvester ant species endemic to the western Gulf Coastal Plain of North America. Genetic studies indicate central Texas serves as the center of genetic diversity, consistent with Pleistocene refugia patterns observed in many regional species. Northern populations in Arkansas and Oklahoma exhibit lower genetic diversity and evidence of population contraction rather than recent range expansion. The species shows signs of dispersal limitation, with high genetic diversity and few identical sequences among sampled individuals. Its decline appears driven by a combination of habitat loss and limited dispersal capacity, though exact mechanisms remain under investigation.
Polites mardon
Mardon skipper
Polites mardon, the Mardon skipper, is a small butterfly in the family Hesperiidae endemic to the Pacific Northwest of the United States. It inhabits native grassland prairies, where it has been observed using native fescue grasses as oviposition sites. The species is listed as endangered in Washington state and was petitioned for federal endangered species listing in 2002. Conservation efforts initiated by the Xerces Society have focused on habitat protection and research into its ecological requirements.
Polyphylla barbata
Mount Hermon June Beetle
Polyphylla barbata is a federally endangered scarab beetle endemic to a single restricted locality in the Zayante sandhills of Santa Cruz County, California. The species occupies less than 1,500 acres of habitat, making it one of the most geographically limited beetles in North America. Adults are active in mid-summer, with males flying at dusk to locate flightless females using pheromone-detecting antennae. The species faces severe habitat loss from sand mining and development, with over 40% of its sandhills habitat already destroyed.
Pseudocopaeodes eunus
alkali skipper, Carson wandering skipper (for ssp. obscurus)
Pseudocopaeodes eunus is a rare skipper butterfly endemic to alkali flat habitats in the western United States and Mexico. The species comprises five recognized subspecies, with P. e. obscurus (Carson wandering skipper) federally listed as endangered due to habitat loss and extremely limited distribution. It is a small butterfly with distinctive checkered wing patterns and low, erratic flight. The subspecies is listed as federally threatened and state endangered in Ohio and New Jersey due to habitat loss and pesticide exposure. Populations have declined significantly from insecticide spraying targeting spongy moth outbreaks.
Rhadine
Rhadine is a genus of ground beetles (Carabidae: Platyninae) described by LeConte in 1846. Many species are troglobitic, restricted to cave habitats in North America, particularly in Texas. Several species, including R. exilis and R. infernalis, are federally listed as endangered due to their restricted ranges and vulnerability to habitat disturbance. The genus is named after a figure from Greek mythology.
Rhaphiomidas
flower-loving flies
Rhaphiomidas is a genus of mydid flies comprising fewer than 30 species and subspecies restricted to desert regions of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Adults are active for brief periods in spring or fall, with multiple species in the same dune system often separated by seasonal timing. Several taxa are critically endangered due to habitat loss from development and recreational disturbance.
Satyrium edwardsii
Edwards' Hairstreak
Satyrium edwardsii, the Edwards' Hairstreak, is a butterfly in the family Lycaenidae. It occurs in eastern North America from the United States into southern Canada. Larvae feed on Quercus species, particularly scrub oak (Q. ilicifolia). The species has been documented as endangered in some regions and exhibits myrmecophilous associations with ants.
Schinia bimatris
White Flower Moth
Schinia bimatris, commonly known as the White Flower Moth, is a small noctuid moth species found in the south-central and south-eastern United States and in a disjunct population in Manitoba, Canada. The species is designated as Endangered under Canada's Species At Risk Act. Adults are distinctive in their entirely white wings, thorax, and abdomen with an orange head, and have a wingspan of approximately 30 mm. The larval stage remains undescribed, and the host plant relationship is poorly understood, though Nuttall's Evening-primrose (Oenothera nuttallii) has been suggested as a possible food source.
Schinia gracilenta
Slender Flower Moth, Iva Flower Moth
Schinia gracilenta is a small noctuid moth native to North America, first described by Jacob Hübner in 1818. The species has a wingspan of approximately 28 mm and produces one generation annually. It is listed as endangered in Connecticut, reflecting localized population concerns in parts of its range.
Somatochlora hineana
Hine's Emerald, Hine's Emerald Dragonfly
Somatochlora hineana is a rare dragonfly species endemic to North America, listed as endangered in Canada since 2011 and of conservation concern in the United States. The species is highly specialized, requiring groundwater discharge areas in wetland habitats to complete its life cycle. It exhibits habitat segregation between sexes and has been documented with biased sex ratios, factors that complicate conservation efforts. The Canadian population is restricted to the Minesing Wetlands in Ontario, while U.S. populations occur in Michigan and other states with suitable calcareous wetland habitats.
Strymon acis
Bartram's scrub-hairstreak, Caribbean Scrub-Hairstreak
Strymon acis is a small lycaenid butterfly with a wingspan of 22–29 mm, occurring in southern Florida and the West Indies. The subspecies S. a. bartrami, restricted to southern Florida, is federally listed as Endangered under the United States Endangered Species Act. The species is tightly associated with pine rockland habitats and depends on Croton linearis as its larval host plant.
Stygobromus pecki
Peck's cave amphipod
Stygobromus pecki is a small, eyeless, unpigmented cave-dwelling amphipod endemic to four spring systems in Comal County, Texas. It is a federally listed endangered species in the United States and classified as Endangered on the IUCN Red List due to its extremely limited geographic distribution. The species inhabits subterranean limestone aquifers and exhibits adaptations typical of stygobitic organisms, including light sensitivity and starvation resistance. Very few individuals have been documented since its listing, and no formal recovery plan or comprehensive population assessment exists as of 2022.
Stygoparnus
Comal Springs dryopid beetle (for sole species S. comalensis)
Stygoparnus is a monotypic genus of dryopid beetles containing the single species Stygoparnus comalensis, known as the Comal Springs dryopid beetle. The genus is endemic to central Texas spring systems fed by the Edwards Aquifer. Its sole member is a federally endangered, subterranean-obligate aquatic beetle with vestigial eyes and reduced pigmentation. The genus represents the only known aquatic lineage within the family Dryopidae.
Stygoparnus comalensis
Comal Springs dryopid beetle
Stygoparnus comalensis is a federally endangered, subterranean-obligate dryopid beetle endemic to three spring systems in the Edwards Aquifer region of central Texas. Adults are approximately 2 mm long with vestigial eyes and undeveloped wings, reflecting their troglobitic ancestry. The species exhibits extreme population genetic structure with no gene flow among localities, indicating evolutionary isolation. Captive studies reveal strong habitat preferences for wood substrates and specific phototactic responses to light wavelength. The beetle serves as a surrogate species for monitoring aquifer health and faces threats from groundwater extraction, pollution, and drought-induced springflow reduction.
Texamaurops
Texamaurops is a genus of small rove beetles (Staphylinidae: Pselaphinae) established by Barr & Steeves in 1963. The genus contains at least one described species, Texamaurops reddelli, commonly known as the Kretschmarr Cave mold beetle. Members of this genus are associated with cave environments and belong to the diverse tribe Batrisini within the ant-loving beetle subfamily Pselaphinae.
Texella
cave harvestmen, Texella harvesters
Texella is a genus of armored harvestmen (Opiliones: Phalangodidae) containing more than 20 described species. The genus is endemic to cave and karst systems of central Texas, where species exhibit varying degrees of troglomorphy. Several species, including T. reyesi and T. reddelli, are federally endangered due to extreme habitat restriction.
