Documented species exhibit reduced or absent eyes and morphological specializations for subterranean or interstitial life.

Isotomodes
Isotomodes is a genus of springtails (Collembola: Isotomidae) comprising approximately 34 described species worldwide. The genus is readily distinguished from other Isotomidae by the distinctive morphology and chaetotaxy (bristle arrangement) of its last abdominal segments. Species are predominantly distributed across Europe—especially the Mediterranean region—and the Americas, with scattered records from East Asia and Oceania. The genus shows particular ecological specialization for interstitial sandy habitats, including supralittoral zones and inland biotopes.

Palpigradi

Palpigradi is an order of minute arachnids, commonly called microwhip scorpions or palpigrades. They are the sister group to Solifugae (camel spiders), measuring 1–3 mm in length. These pale, thin-bodied arachnids inhabit wet tropical and subtropical soils worldwide, living interstitially in moist microhabitats under stones and in caves. They possess a distinctive multi-segmented flagellum that may comprise half the body length. The order contains two families, Prokoeneniidae and Eukoeneniidae, distinguished by the presence or absence of ventral respiratory sacs.

These stoneflies are part of the Arctoperlaria, a suborder of Plecoptera found primarily in the Northern Hemisphere.

Larvae are fossorial, inhabiting interstitial spaces in gravel and pebble substrates of streams and rivers, and possess distinctive mandibular tusks used for excavation and defense. Adults are aerial and short-lived. The family has a disjunct distribution spanning North America and East Asia.

Stenasellidae
Stenasellidae is a family of stygobiotic (obligate subterranean aquatic) isopods in the suborder Asellota. The family comprises approximately 10 genera including Stenasellus, Metastenasellus, and Parastenasellus, with species distributed across groundwater habitats in Africa, the Middle East, southern Europe, and Southeast Asia. These crustaceans are exclusively adapted to life in continental underground waters including caves, wells, and interstitial aquifers. Their evolutionary history has been shaped by Quaternary climatic events including aridification in tropical zones and glaciations in temperate regions.

Tortopus
Tortopus is a genus of burrowing mayflies in the family Polymitarcyidae, restricted to six species based on cladistic revision: T. igaranus, T. circumfluus, T. harrisi, T. zottai, T. bellus, and T. arenales. The genus is characterized by distinctive morphological synapomorphies including female parastyli receptors with long anterior furrows, entirely flattened penes, and nymphs bearing two subapical tubercles on mandibular tusks. Nymphs construct U-shaped tunnels in clay banks, a behavior that renders them difficult to sample with standard aquatic survey methods.
