Acanthepeira stellata
starbellied orbweaver, starbellied spider
Acanthepeira stellata is a distinctive orb-weaving spider known for its hard, spiked abdomen covered in prominent tubercles that give it a star-like appearance. The species ranges from Canada to Mexico and is commonly found in grasslands, prairies, meadows, and agricultural areas. It is nocturnal, constructing vertical orb webs close to the ground to capture prey. The spider exhibits effective crypsis, resembling plant debris such as burs or seed pods when at rest.
Atypus karschi
Karsch's Purseweb Spider
Atypus karschi is a mygalomorph spider native to East Asia (Korea, China, Taiwan, Japan) that has been introduced and established in southeastern Pennsylvania, USA. It constructs distinctive camouflaged tubular purse-webs attached to trees, shrubs, or walls, with a portion buried underground. The species was previously misidentified in North America as A. snetsingeri, but genetic analysis confirmed conspecificity with Asian populations. It is the first documented case of an introduced purse-web spider.
Cyclosa turbinata
Humped Trashline Orbweaver, Trashline Orbweaver
Cyclosa turbinata is a small orb-weaving spider (Araneidae) known for its distinctive 'trashline' web decoration, where the spider arranges debris, prey carcasses, and egg sacs in a vertical line through the web hub to camouflage itself from visual predators. Females possess two anterior dorsal humps on the abdomen, distinguishing them from the similar C. conica. The species exhibits an exceptionally short-period circadian clock of approximately 19 hours, regulating its locomotor and web-building activities. Native to North and Central America, it has been introduced to Hawaii and other regions, with spiderlings dispersing via wind-borne silk (ballooning).
Erigone atra
Post Dwarf Weaver
Erigone atra is a small sheet-weaving spider in the family Linyphiidae, commonly known as the Post Dwarf Weaver. It is one of the most abundant species in its genus, with a holarctic distribution spanning North America, Europe, and Asia. The species is notable for its extensive use of aerial dispersal via ballooning, which enables colonization of agricultural habitats including cereal fields and grasslands. E. atra is recognized as an important biological control agent in agroecosystems, where it preys on crop pests such as aphids.
Erigoninae
dwarf spiders, money spiders
Erigoninae is the largest subfamily of Linyphiidae (sheet-web weavers), itself the second largest spider family. These minute spiders are commonly called dwarf spiders in the United States and money spiders in England. The subfamily contains over 2,000 described species, making it the most numerous group within the sheet-web weavers. Many species inhabit leaf litter and construct small sheet webs, while others occupy diverse terrestrial habitats from coastal dunes to alpine timberlines.
Eustala
humpbacked orb-weavers
Eustala is a genus of orb-weaver spiders in the family Araneidae, first described by Eugène Simon in 1895. As of November 2024, the genus contains 87 species distributed primarily across the Americas, from the United States through Central America to South America, with highest diversity in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina. Several species have been documented exhibiting specialized ecological relationships, including myrmecophily (living among ants) in Central American species that inhabit ant-defended acacia plants. The genus includes the well-known humpbacked orb-weaver, Eustala anastera, found across North and Central America.

Burrowing Wolf Spiders
Geolycosa is a genus of burrowing wolf spiders (family Lycosidae) established by Montgomery in 1904. These spiders are characterized by their obligate burrowing lifestyle, constructing deep cylindrical burrows in sandy or loose soils. Some species build distinctive turrets around burrow openings using sticks and debris. The genus includes approximately 70 species distributed across North America, with some species extending into the Levant. Geolycosa species are medium to large spiders with morphological adaptations for digging, including enlarged chelicerae and stout anterior legs.
Geolycosa patellonigra
Geolycosa patellonigra is a burrowing wolf spider species in the family Lycosidae, described by Wallace in 1942. It is found in the United States, with records from Florida and potentially other southeastern states. As a member of the genus Geolycosa, it constructs deep silk-lined burrows in sandy soils and exhibits notable ballooning behavior—spiderling aerial dispersal via silk threads—at frequencies higher than typical for wolf spiders. The species shows geographical variation in its seasonal distribution patterns.
Geolycosa turricola
turret spider, burrowing wolf spider
Geolycosa turricola is a burrowing wolf spider (family Lycosidae) native to the eastern United States, ranging as far west as Ohio. This species constructs deep, silk-lined burrows in sandy soils, often with a distinctive turret of silk and debris at the entrance. It exhibits an obligate burrowing lifestyle with a two-year life cycle and has been documented showing high frequencies of ballooning behavior—aerial dispersal via silk threads—despite occupying relatively stable sand dune habitats. Spiderlings display subsocial organization with prolonged mutual tolerance within broods, facilitated primarily by chemical communication.
Linyphiidae
Sheetweb weavers, Dwarf spiders, Money spiders
Linyphiidae is the second largest family of spiders worldwide, comprising approximately 5,000 described species in around 650 genera. Members are characterized by extremely small body sizes, typically under 5 mm, and the construction of flat, sheet-like webs often suspended in a maze of supporting threads. The family exhibits remarkable diversity in male genital morphology, with many species displaying elaborate cephalic projections and modified pedipalps used in species identification. Ecologically, they function as important predators of small arthropods in diverse habitats ranging from forest canopies to snow surfaces and cave systems.
Microlinyphia pusilla
Platform spider
Microlinyphia pusilla is a small sheet-web spider in the family Linyphiidae, characterized by strong sexual dimorphism and a distinctive hammock-shaped web built close to the ground in vegetation. Males actively wander in search of mates during autumn, while females and immature males remain on their webs. The species has a Holarctic distribution across North America and Eurasia.
Oreoneta
A genus of dwarf spiders (family Linyphiidae) established in 1894, comprising approximately 30 species distributed across cold-temperate and Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Most species inhabit high-latitude or high-altitude environments. The genus was revised extensively by Saaristo & Marusik in 2004, resulting in numerous new species descriptions.

Spintharus is a genus of cobweb spiders (Theridiidae: Argyrodinae) established by Nicholas Marcellus Hentz in 1850. The genus ranges from the northeastern United States to Brazil, with the highest diversity in the Caribbean. A 2018 revision by Agnarsson and colleagues described fifteen new species, many named after celebrities and public figures, making Spintharus notable for having the most species named after celebrities of any spider genus. Molecular evidence indicates that what was historically considered a single widespread species, S. flavidus, actually represents a 30 million year old radiation of at least 16 short-range endemic species in the Caribbean region.
Spintharus flavidus
Spintharus flavidus is a cobweb spider in the family Theridiidae, historically considered a single widespread species ranging from northern North America to Brazil and throughout the Caribbean. Molecular phylogenetic analysis has rejected this hypothesis, revealing instead a 30 million year old radiation of at least 16 distinct species in the Caribbean region alone. Nearly all are short-range endemics with limited overwater dispersal ability. The Caribbean colonization event occurred approximately 30 million years ago, coinciding with the GAARLandia landbridge hypothesis.
Synema
Synema is a genus of crab spiders (Thomisidae) with a wide distribution across most parts of the world. The genus includes species with high morphological variability, as demonstrated by integrative studies combining molecular and morphological data. Some species, such as S. globosum, exhibit deep mitochondrial divergence without corresponding nuclear or morphological differentiation, complicating species delimitation. Members of this genus are typically found in leaf-dwelling habitats and exhibit ballooning behavior as juveniles, which contributes to their broad geographic range.
Thanatus
false crab spiders, running crab spiders
A genus of running crab spiders (family Philodromidae) described by C.L. Koch in 1837. Adults reach 5–6 mm in body length and are primarily ground-dwelling hunters found on low vegetation and open surfaces. The genus is distinguished from similar Philodromus by eye arrangement differences and is characterized by a prominent leaf-like cardiac mark on the anterior dorsal abdomen. Thanatus species overwinter as adults and are among the most abundant active spiders in early spring in temperate regions.
Thanatus formicinus
Running Crab Spider, Ant-mimic Crab Spider
Thanatus formicinus is a running crab spider in the family Philodromidae with a Holarctic distribution spanning North America, Europe, and Asia. It is a ground-dwelling hunter active during spring and early summer, often observed basking on warm surfaces like concrete paths. The species exhibits ant-mimicry in both appearance and behavior, a distinctive trait among crab spiders.
Thanatus striatus
Striped Running Crab Spider
Thanatus striatus is a running crab spider in the family Philodromidae, characterized by its striped cephalothorax and ground-dwelling hunting behavior. The species has a broad distribution across the Northern Hemisphere, including North America, Europe, Turkey, Russia, and Central Asia. It is active primarily in spring and early summer, with adults capable of overwintering. The species is distinguished from similar slender crab spiders by its more robust body form and preference for ground-level habitats.
Thanatus vulgaris
Cricket Thief Spider
Thanatus vulgaris is a running crab spider in the family Philodromidae with a remarkably wide global distribution spanning native Palearctic ranges and introduced populations across multiple continents. The species occupies diverse terrestrial habitats from natural grasslands and shrublands to agricultural systems. It is known for ground-dwelling behavior and has been observed engaging in ballooning dispersal. Two subspecies are recognized: T. v. vulgaris and T. v. creticus.
Thyridopteryx
bagworm moths
Thyridopteryx is a genus of bagworm moths (Psychidae) comprising five described species. The genus is best known for T. ephemeraeformis, the evergreen bagworm or North American bagworm, a significant pest of ornamental and landscape plants. Larvae construct protective cases from silk and plant fragments, which they carry throughout their development. The genus exhibits unusual sexual dimorphism: males are winged and capable of flight, while females are wingless and remain within their cases for life.
Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis
Evergreen Bagworm Moth, Eastern Bagworm, Common Bagworm, Common Basket Worm, North American Bagworm
Thyridopteryx ephemeraeformis, the evergreen bagworm moth, is a polyphagous pest species in the family Psychidae. Larvae construct distinctive silken bags decorated with plant fragments, which they carry throughout their development. Males emerge as winged adults with nearly scale-free, transparent wings—reflected in the genus name derived from Greek thyris (window) and ptera (wing). Females remain wingless and never leave their bags, releasing sex pheromones to attract mates. The species exhibits remarkable sexual dimorphism in both morphology and behavior, with males and females showing differential stratification on host trees and distinct pupation heights.
Trichonephila
Banded Orbweavers, Golden Orb-weavers
Trichonephila is a genus of large orb-weaver spiders renowned for constructing massive, golden-hued webs. Females exhibit pronounced sexual size dimorphism, reaching 12–40 mm in body length while males remain much smaller. The genus was elevated from subgenus status in 2019 and now encompasses 13 species distributed across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide. Several species, including the Jorō spider (T. clavata) and golden silk spider (T. clavipes), have become notable invaders in North America, with T. clavata demonstrating remarkable cold tolerance and rapid range expansion along the eastern United States.
Trichonephila clavata
Jorō spider, Joro Spider, Parachute spider
Trichonephila clavata, commonly known as the Jorō spider, is a large orb-weaving spider native to East Asia that has become established as an invasive species in the southeastern United States since approximately 2010. First confirmed in Georgia in 2014, it has expanded rapidly across multiple states through a combination of ballooning dispersal and human-mediated transport. The species is notable for its substantial size, striking coloration, and extensive golden webs, but poses minimal risk to humans due to small fangs and docile behavior. Its physiological adaptations—including higher metabolic rate, faster heart rate, and greater cold tolerance than its congener Trichonephila clavipes—suggest potential for continued northward range expansion.

ground crab spiders
Xysticus is a genus of ground-dwelling crab spiders (family Thomisidae) known for ambush hunting on the ground rather than in flowers. These spiders possess elongated first and second pairs of legs with spines that help secure prey. They are among the most frequently observed ballooning spiders, using silk threads to disperse via wind currents. The genus is also a documented prey source for spider wasps in the genus Dipogon.
Xysticus
Ground Crab Spiders
Xysticus is a large genus of approximately 275–300 species of ground crab spiders in the family Thomisidae. These spiders are ambush predators that do not build webs, instead hunting near the ground by seizing prey with their enlarged anterior legs. The genus exhibits strong sexual dimorphism, with females typically reaching 10 mm in body length while males are roughly half that size. Species identification requires microscopic examination of genitalia due to the morphological similarity among members of the genus.
Xysticus auctificus
Xysticus auctificus is a species of ground crab spider in the family Thomisidae, distributed across north-central North America. As a member of the genus Xysticus, it exhibits the characteristic crab-like leg arrangement and ambush hunting strategy typical of this diverse spider group. The species has been documented in prairie and grassland habitats, where it relies on crypsis to capture prey.
Xysticus canadensis
Canada ground crab spider
Xysticus canadensis is a species of ground crab spider in the family Thomisidae, first described by Gertsch in 1934. It is distributed across northern North America and extends into Russia. As a member of the genus Xysticus, it exhibits the characteristic ambush-hunting behavior and flattened body form typical of ground crab spiders. The species overwinters as an adult or immature, emerging in early spring to hunt and reproduce.
Xysticus chippewa
Xysticus chippewa is a crab spider species in the family Thomisidae, first described by Gertsch in 1953. As a member of the genus Xysticus, it is a ground-dwelling ambush predator that does not construct webs to capture prey. The species occurs in northern North America, with records from the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Like other Xysticus species, it has been observed engaging in ballooning behavior for dispersal.
Xysticus emertoni
Emerton's Crab Spider
Xysticus emertoni, commonly known as Emerton's crab spider, is a species of ground crab spider in the family Thomisidae. It occurs across a broad transcontinental range spanning North America and Eurasia, including the United States, Canada, Russia, and Central Asia through China. As a member of the genus Xysticus, it exhibits the typical crab spider body plan with laterally extended legs adapted for ambush predation. The species has been documented as prey for spider wasps in the genus Dipogon.
Xysticus fraternus
Brotherly Ground Crab Spider
Xysticus fraternus is a species of ground crab spider in the family Thomisidae. It occurs in the United States and Canada. Like other members of the genus Xysticus, it is an ambush predator that does not construct webs to capture prey. The species is part of a diverse genus of crab spiders that includes many habitat generalists.
Xysticus funestus
mournful ground crab spider, sad ground crab spider, deadly ground crab spider
Xysticus funestus is a ground crab spider in the family Thomisidae, native to North America. It is one of many ambush-hunting crab spiders that rely on elongated front legs to capture prey. The species has been documented in field observations as an adult in early spring and has been recorded as prey for the spider wasp Dipogon calipterus. Despite its alarming common name "deadly ground crab spider," it poses no medical threat to humans.

Xysticus gulosus is a species of crab spider in the family Thomisidae, described by Keyserling in 1880. It belongs to the genus Xysticus, a diverse group of ground-dwelling ambush predators commonly known as ground crab spiders. The species is distributed across North America, with confirmed records from the Canadian provinces of Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. Like other members of its genus, it likely employs a sit-and-wait hunting strategy, using its enlarged front legs to capture prey.
Xysticus locuples
Xysticus locuples is a species of crab spider in the family Thomisidae, first described by Keyserling in 1880. It is distributed across North America, with records from Canada and the United States including Alberta. As a member of the genus Xysticus, it belongs to a group of ground-dwelling ambush predators commonly known as ground crab spiders. The genus Xysticus is known for species that employ ballooning as a primary dispersal mechanism, particularly in spring and fall.
Xysticus luctuosus
Xysticus luctuosus is a species of ground crab spider in the family Thomisidae, first described by Blackwall in 1836. It has a broad distribution spanning North America, Europe, Turkey, the Caucasus, Russia (from European to Far East regions), Kazakhstan, Iran, and Central Asia. As a member of the genus Xysticus, it exhibits the characteristic crab spider body plan with laterally extended legs adapted for ambush predation. The species has been documented in 45 iNaturalist observations, indicating moderate citizen science engagement.
Xysticus obscurus
Xysticus obscurus is a species of ground crab spider in the family Thomisidae, first described by Collett in 1877. It is a holarctic species with a broad distribution spanning North America, Europe, and across Russia from European Russia to Siberia. As a member of the genus Xysticus, it is an ambush predator that does not construct webs for prey capture. The species has been documented in Alberta, Canada, and is part of a genus known for ballooning behavior as a dispersal mechanism.
Xysticus pellax
Xysticus pellax is a species of crab spider in the family Thomisidae, first described by O. Pickard-Cambridge in 1894. It is native to North America, with records from Canada and the United States. Like other members of its genus, it is a ground-dwelling ambush predator.
Xysticus punctatus
Punctated Ground Crab Spider
Xysticus punctatus is a ground-dwelling crab spider in the family Thomisidae. It is found in the United States and Canada, with records from provinces including Alberta, British Columbia, and Manitoba. As a member of the genus Xysticus, it shares the characteristic crab-like posture and ambush hunting strategy of its relatives.
Xysticus speciese
Xysticus speciese is a species of crab spider in the family Thomisidae. The genus Xysticus is characterized by ambush hunting behavior and distinctive leg morphology adapted for seizing prey. Members of this genus are typically ground-dwelling and known to overwinter as adults or immatures.
Xysticus triguttatus
Three-banded Crab Spider
Xysticus triguttatus, commonly known as the three-banded crab spider, is a small ambush-hunting spider in the family Thomisidae. The species is widely distributed across North America, with records from the United States and Canada including Alberta, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan. As a member of the genus Xysticus, it exhibits the characteristic crab-like posture and hunting behavior typical of ground crab spiders, lying in wait for prey rather than constructing webs.
