Araneae
spiders
Araneae is an order of air-breathing arachnids comprising over 51,000 described species across 136 families, ranking seventh in total species diversity among all organismal orders. Members are characterized by two body regions (cephalothorax and unsegmented abdomen), eight legs, cheliceral fangs with venom glands, and abdominal spinnerets that produce silk. The order is divided into two suborders: Mesothelae (87 species, retaining abdominal segmentation) and Opisthothelae (over 39,000 species, without abdominal segmentation). Spiders occupy virtually all terrestrial habitats worldwide except Antarctica, functioning exclusively as predators of insects and other small arthropods.
Atypus
Purse-web Spider, Purseweb Spider
Atypus is a genus of mygalomorph spiders commonly known as purse-web spiders, first described by Latreille in 1804. These spiders construct distinctive silk tubes (purse-webs) that extend from underground burrows vertically along tree bases, fences, or other surfaces. The genus occurs across Eurasia and northern Africa, with 38 described species as of 2025. Atypus species are perennial, with females living 8–10 years, and conduct nearly all life activities—including predation, mating, and egg-laying—within their sealed webs. One Asian species, A. karschi, has been introduced and established in southeastern Pennsylvania, USA.
Caloptilia serotinella
Cherry Leafroller Moth
A small moth in the family Gracillariidae known for its distinctive leaf-rolling larval behavior. The caterpillar constructs leaf rolls on cherry and related host plants by spinning silk strands between opposing leaf surfaces, generating collective force exceeding 0.1 N to draw leaves into tight cylinders. Adults are attracted to ultraviolet light and have been documented at moth-lighting events in North America.
Chelicerata
Chelicerates
Chelicerata is a major subphylum of arthropods characterized by the presence of chelicerae—pincer-like or fang-like appendages that are the first pair of structures before the mouth. The group includes horseshoe crabs, sea spiders, and arachnids (spiders, scorpions, mites, ticks, harvestmen, and allies). Chelicerates diverged from other arthropods by the mid-Cambrian period, approximately 508 million years ago. With over 77,000 described living species and estimates suggesting hundreds of thousands more undescribed species, chelicerates represent one of the most diverse animal groups after insects. Most living species are terrestrial air-breathers, though marine lineages persist.
Hyperinae
Cocoon Weevils
Hyperinae is a subfamily of true weevils (Curculionidae) whose larvae are notable for constructing silk cocoons for pupation, earning them the common name 'Cocoon Weevils.' Larvae of some species exhibit unusual social behaviors, including coordinated processionary movement and chemical trail-following—traits convergent with social caterpillars but rare among beetles. The subfamily's taxonomic placement has been debated, with some species historically classified under Molytinae. Host plant associations include Malvaceae and Ericaceae, with the latter representing a newly documented host family for the group.
Oreoneta
A genus of dwarf spiders (family Linyphiidae) established in 1894, comprising approximately 30 species distributed across cold-temperate and Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Most species inhabit high-latitude or high-altitude environments. The genus was revised extensively by Saaristo & Marusik in 2004, resulting in numerous new species descriptions.

tube maker caddisflies
Plectrocnemia is a genus of tube maker caddisflies in the family Polycentropodidae comprising more than 120 described species. Larvae are aquatic predators that construct silken capture nets to intercept prey. The genus has been extensively studied for its larval silk production, vibration-mediated predatory behavior, and population genetics. Species occur across Europe and into western Asia, with detailed biological information available for several well-studied species including P. conspersa and P. brevis.

Tube Maker Caddisflies, Trumpet-net Caddisflies
Polycentropodidae is a family of caddisflies (Trichoptera) commonly known as tube makers or trumpet-net caddisflies. The family contains at least 33 genera and over 720 described species globally. Larvae construct distinctive silken retreats—short flattened tubes in rock hollows or slender tubular structures among aquatic vegetation—often surrounded by silken threads that function as prey detection devices. The family exhibits a disjunct distribution pattern in some regions, with species found in both tropical and temperate zones.
Psychomyiidae
Net Tube Caddisflies, tube-making caddisflies, trumpet-net caddisflies
Psychomyiidae is a family of tube-making caddisflies (order Trichoptera) characterized by larvae that construct silken galleries or tubes on submerged surfaces. Adults are typically small with reduced wing venation, including absence of forewing fork I and shortened hindwing forks. The family is distinguished from similar Polycentropodidae by leg spur formula 2-4-4, short thyridial cell, and male genitalia with elongate preanal appendages and reduced tergum IX. Larvae possess separated submental sclerites, broad foretrochantin, and whip-like pupal mandible apices. The family contains approximately 10 extant genera and has a global distribution with notable diversity in the Oriental and Western Palearctic regions.
Trichonephila clavata
Jorō spider, Joro Spider, Parachute spider
Trichonephila clavata, commonly known as the Jorō spider, is a large orb-weaving spider native to East Asia that has become established as an invasive species in the southeastern United States since approximately 2010. First confirmed in Georgia in 2014, it has expanded rapidly across multiple states through a combination of ballooning dispersal and human-mediated transport. The species is notable for its substantial size, striking coloration, and extensive golden webs, but poses minimal risk to humans due to small fangs and docile behavior. Its physiological adaptations—including higher metabolic rate, faster heart rate, and greater cold tolerance than its congener Trichonephila clavipes—suggest potential for continued northward range expansion.

hackled orb-weaver, featherlegged orb-weaver
Uloborus diversus is a cribellate orb-weaving spider in the family Uloboridae. It inhabits desert regions of the southwestern United States and Mexico. The species is one of few North American spiders that lack venom glands, instead subduing prey through silk constriction. It has become an important model organism for studying the evolution of spidroins (spider silk proteins) and the neurobiology of orb-web construction behavior. A chromosome-level genome assembly has been completed to support this research.
