Cyrtophora
tent-web spiders, tentweb weavers
Cyrtophora is a genus of tent-web spiders in the family Araneidae. Despite being classified as orb-weavers, these spiders construct horizontal, tent-like non-sticky webs rather than traditional orb webs. Many species exhibit colonial behavior, with multiple individuals sharing extensive web structures. The genus is distributed across tropical and subtropical regions worldwide, with some species introduced to new areas. Females typically reach about 10 mm in body length.
Leucauge argyra
Leucauge argyra is a colonial orb-weaving spider in the family Tetragnathidae, found from the United States through Brazil and the Caribbean. It constructs individual orb webs within a shared framework of support lines maintained by the colony. The species exhibits size stratification in colonies, with larger adults occupying higher web positions and smaller juveniles in lower positions. It is notably the host of the parasitoid wasp Hymenoepimecis argyraphaga.
Metepeira labyrinthea
Labyrinth Orbweaver
Metepeira labyrinthea, commonly known as the labyrinth orbweaver, is a small orb-weaving spider in the family Araneidae. It is distinguished by its highly characteristic web structure, which combines a small orb web with an irregular, tangled snare and a debris-covered retreat. The species occurs across much of the Americas and exhibits notable ecological interactions, including serving as host to kleptoparasitic dewdrop spiders.
Plectrocnemia
tube maker caddisflies
Plectrocnemia is a genus of tube maker caddisflies in the family Polycentropodidae comprising more than 120 described species. Larvae are aquatic predators that construct silken capture nets to intercept prey. The genus has been extensively studied for its larval silk production, vibration-mediated predatory behavior, and population genetics. Species occur across Europe and into western Asia, with detailed biological information available for several well-studied species including P. conspersa and P. brevis.

horse's wasp
Polistes major major is a neotropical eusocial paper wasp subspecies most commonly found on Hispaniola Island and within Central America. It is known locally as "avispa de caballo" (horse's wasp) in the Dominican Republic. As a member of the genus Polistes, it is a social wasp that constructs exposed paper nests and lives in colonies with a reproductive hierarchy.
Publilia reticulata
Publilia reticulata is a colonial treehopper (Membracidae) that feeds on New York ironweed (Vernonia noveboracensis). It exhibits spatial segregation from the co-occurring aphid Aphis vernoniae through differential microhabitat use on shared host plants, with P. reticulata concentrated on middle leaves while A. vernoniae occupies inflorescences early in the season. The species maintains this position even as A. vernoniae shifts to senescent leaves late in the season, minimizing actual overlap despite apparent spatial convergence.
