Moneilema annulatum is a flightless cactus beetle in the family Cerambycidae, first described by Thomas Say in 1824. Adults are found almost exclusively on opuntioid cacti (prickly pears and chollas), where they feed on plant tissues and flowers. Larvae tunnel within cactus stems, often causing visible damage in the form of hardened black exudate. The species occurs across western North America from the Great Plains to the Pacific coast.

snowi
leaf-footed bug
Narnia snowi is a species of leaf-footed bug in the family Coreidae, first described by Van Duzee in 1906. It belongs to the genus Narnia, which is characterized by members that inhabit cactus habitats. The species is documented in the southwestern United States, particularly in Arizona, where it has been recorded on fishhook barrel cacti and other cactus species. It is part of a group of coreid bugs associated with desert succulent plants.
Narthecophora
Narthecophora is a monotypic moth genus in the family Noctuidae, subfamily Stiriinae. It contains a single species, Narthecophora pulverea, described by John Bernhardt Smith in 1900. The genus is restricted to the Sonoran Desert region of southern Arizona and northern Sonora, Mexico.
Novomessor albisetosus
desert harvester ant
Novomessor albisetosus, commonly known as the desert harvester ant, is a medium-sized ant species native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. First described by Gustav Mayr in 1886 as Aphaenogaster albisetosa, it was transferred to the revived genus Novomessor in 2015 following phylogenetic evidence of its distinctness from Aphaenogaster. Workers measure 6–8.5 mm and display ferruginous body coloration with distinctive morphological features including a shorter head and subparallel eyes compared to congeners. The species exhibits age-related task allocation among workers and cooperative foraging behavior, with colonies nesting underground or beneath stones in arid and semi-arid habitats.
Oecleus perpictus
Oecleus perpictus is a species of planthopper in the family Cixiidae, described by Van Duzee in 1929. It belongs to the tribe Oecleini, a group of cixiids characterized by their association with xeric and semi-arid environments. The species is recorded from the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Like other cixiids, it is presumed to have piercing-sucking mouthparts and a life cycle involving root-feeding nymphs and winged adults.
Paraphidippus basalis
Agave Jumping Spider
Paraphidippus basalis is a jumping spider in the family Salticidae, commonly known as the Agave Jumping Spider. It is native to the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. The species exhibits a notable ecological specialization, being strongly associated with rosette-forming plants including agaves, sotols, and yuccas. This degree of plant-specific habitat association is uncommon among jumping spiders, which are typically generalist predators.
Pogonomyrmex tenuispinus
Pogonomyrmex tenuispinus is a species of harvester ant in the genus Pogonomyrmex. Like other members of this genus, it is a seed-collecting ant native to arid regions. The species was described by Auguste Forel in 1914. As a harvester ant, it likely participates in seed dispersal and ecosystem engineering through nest construction, though specific ecological studies for this species are limited.

arizonensis
Arizona Paper Wasp
A social paper wasp found in the southwestern United States and Mexico. Once considered a subspecies of Polistes exclamans, it is now recognized as a distinct species. It builds exposed paper nests under palm fronds, shrubbery, and man-made structures. Females produce ant-repellent secretions from sternal glands to protect nests. The species is notably tolerant of close human observation and can be distinguished from similar Polistes species by facial coloration and geographic range.
Polistes flavus
Yellow Paper Wasp
Polistes flavus, commonly known as the yellow paper wasp, is a large, conspicuous paper wasp native to the southwestern United States and Mexico. It is strongly associated with the Sonoran Desert, where it occupies the same elevation belt as saguaro cacti. The species builds exposed paper nests from wood fibers mixed with saliva, typically placing them under building eaves or among tree branches. Adults forage for caterpillars and other insects to feed larvae, while consuming nectar and honeydew for their own energy needs. Despite its relative abundance in suitable habitats, detailed natural history information remains limited.
