The caterpillars feed primarily on Saxifraga species and certain willows.
Habroscelimorpha dorsalis dorsalis
Northeastern Beach Tiger Beetle
The Northeastern Beach Tiger Beetle is the largest subspecies of Habroscelimorpha dorsalis, endemic to sandy Atlantic coast beaches of the northeastern United States. Listed as threatened under the U.S. Endangered Species Act since 1990, this diurnal predator has experienced severe population declines due to habitat loss from coastal erosion, shoreline development, and human recreational activity. Adults are active from mid-June through July, while larvae overwinter in deep sand burrows. The species serves as an indicator of beach ecosystem health and requires specific habitat conditions including medium-coarse sand and minimum beach widths of 6.5 feet for successful reproduction.
Harrisina metallica
Western Grapeleaf Skeletonizer Moth, Western Grapeleaf Skeletonizer
Harrisina metallica is a day-flying moth in the family Zygaenidae, commonly known as the western grapeleaf skeletonizer. Adults are deep metallic blue in color and exhibit wasp-mimicry, resembling spider wasps in the family Pompilidae. The species is found in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. Larvae are specialized feeders on grape leaves and Parthenocissus species, skeletonizing foliage by consuming tissue between leaf veins. Caterpillars possess stinging hairs that can cause skin irritation or allergic reactions in humans.
Hesperiidae
Skippers
Hesperiidae, commonly known as skippers, is a large family of diurnal butterflies in the order Lepidoptera. The family contains over 3,500 recognized species distributed worldwide, with greatest diversity in tropical regions. Skippers are named for their rapid, darting flight patterns. A distinctive morphological feature is the antenna tip, which is modified into a narrow hook-like projection rather than the rounded club found in most other butterfly families. The family was formerly placed in its own superfamily Hesperioidea but is now classified within Papilionoidea based on recent molecular studies.
Hippolytidae
broken-back shrimp, cleaner shrimp, anemone shrimp, hump-backed shrimps
Hippolytidae is a family of marine caridean shrimp commonly known as broken-back shrimp, cleaner shrimp, or anemone shrimp. The family was redefined in 2023, with several former genera transferred to other families (Bythocariidae, Lysmatidae, Merguiidae, Thoridae), leaving 16 genera in Hippolytidae sensu stricto. Some members engage in cleaning symbiosis with fish, removing parasites and debris from host bodies. The family shows both diurnal and nocturnal activity patterns, with behavioral differences in cleaning site preferences.
Hippomelas planicauda
Hippomelas planicauda is a large buprestid beetle (family Buprestidae) found in the southwestern United States and Mexico. The species is associated with leguminous host plants, particularly Mimosa dysocarpa (velvetpod mimosa), on which adults are frequently collected by beating flowering branches. It occurs in desert scrub and canyon habitats of southeastern Arizona and adjacent regions, where it is often found in company with other large buprestids such as Hippomelas sphenicus and Gyascutus caelatus.
Juriniopsis adusta
Juriniopsis adusta is a species of tachinid bristle fly found across North America. It is a common and widespread member of the family Tachinidae, frequently observed visiting flowers of Ericameria nauseosa (rubber rabbitbrush) in the western United States. The species is one of the most frequently encountered tachinids in this habitat, often appearing in large numbers during late summer and early fall. Its broad distribution spans from southern Canada through the United States and into Mexico, Central America, and northern South America.
Lampronia
currant moths, shoot borers
Lampronia is a genus of small moths in the family Prodoxidae with a Holarctic distribution. The genus contains approximately 25 described species, with additional undescribed species in North America, Japan, and Iran. Several species are economically significant pests of cultivated currants (Ribes spp.), particularly in northern Europe. Most species are diurnal in habit.
Lebia viridis
colorful foliage ground beetle
Lebia viridis is a predatory ground beetle in the family Carabidae, recognized for its small size and bright metallic coloration. Adults measure 5–7 mm in length and are diurnal, often found on flowers and vegetation. The species occurs across North America, extending south through Mexico and Guatemala, with populations also recorded on Cuba. It is sometimes attracted to lights at night.
Leptoconops
black gnat, no-see-um
Leptoconops is a genus of biting midges (family Ceratopogonidae) commonly known as black gnats or no-see-ums. The genus has a relictual distribution with predominantly tropical and subtropical range, though some species extend to temperate regions including Russia and Canada. Adults are small blood-feeding insects; females are diurnal feeders on vertebrate blood. The genus represents one of the earliest existing lineages of biting midges, with fossil records dating to Cretaceous amber.
Lepturinae
flower longhorn beetles, lepturine beetles
Lepturinae is a subfamily of longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) comprising approximately 150 genera worldwide, with greatest diversity in the Northern Hemisphere. Members are commonly called 'flower longhorns' due to their distinctive adult behavior of visiting flowers for feeding. The subfamily is characterized by slender body form, posteriorly tapering elytra, and eyes that do not surround the antennal bases. Unlike most cerambycids, adults are primarily diurnal. The subfamily was historically broader, with Necydalinae recently recognized as separate. Nine to ten tribes are currently recognized, though some generic placements remain uncertain.
Lepturini
flower longhorns
Lepturini is a tribe of flower longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae: Lepturinae) characterized by adults that frequently visit flowers for pollen feeding. The tribe contains numerous genera distributed across forested and semi-open habitats in the Northern Hemisphere, with some representatives in South America. Larvae develop primarily in woody plants, where they contribute to dead wood decomposition. Adult activity is strongly seasonal and diurnal, with peak flight periods typically occurring in late spring to early summer.
Lucidota atra
black firefly, woodland lucy
Lucidota atra is a diurnal firefly species in the beetle family Lampyridae, native to eastern North America. Unlike most fireflies, adults are active during daylight hours and lack functional light organs. Males locate females using pheromone-sensing antennae rather than bioluminescent signals. The species completes its life cycle in moist woodland habitats, with bioluminescent larvae preying on soft-bodied invertebrates.
Machilinus
rock bristletails
Machilinus is a genus of rock bristletails in the family Meinertellidae, comprising approximately 17 described species. These primitive wingless insects are distinguished from related genera by their diurnal activity pattern, in contrast to the nocturnal habits of many other bristletails. They occupy rocky microhabitats and represent one of the more derived lineages within the Archaeognatha.
Macroglossum stellatarum
Hummingbird Hawk-moth, Hummingbird Hawkmoth, Eurasian Hummingbird Hawkmoth
Macroglossum stellatarum is a diurnal hawkmoth renowned for its hovering flight and long-distance migratory behavior. Adults feed on nectar from diverse flowers using an exceptionally long proboscis, and are significant pollinators across their range. The species exhibits complex visual learning capabilities and innate color preferences that guide foraging decisions. Populations in southern Europe may be resident and multivoltine, while northern populations depend on annual immigration from the south.
Macrolygistopterus rubripennis
Red-winged net-winged beetle
A red net-winged beetle (family Lycidae) in the genus Macrolygistopterus. The species is characterized by bright red to orange-red elytra with distinctive black markings. crown wasp
Megischus is a large genus of crown wasps (family Stephanidae) containing over 90 described species with a cosmopolitan distribution centered in subtropical and tropical regions. The genus is characterized by medium to large body size, with adults ranging from approximately 10–40 mm in length (excluding the ovipositor). Females possess an exceptionally long ovipositor that typically exceeds body length, used to parasitize wood-boring beetle and hymenopteran larvae. The genus serves as an important biological control agent for pest populations of hardwood-damaging insects.
Melanchroia
white-tipped black moths, snowbush spanworms
Melanchroia is a genus of diurnal moths in the family Geometridae, subfamily Ennominae. The genus was established by Jakob Hübner in 1819 and contains eight described species distributed from the southeastern United States through the Neotropics to Argentina. Adults are notable for their striking black and white or black and red coloration, often mistaken for tiger moths or wasp-mimicking groups. The best-known species, M. chephise (white-tipped black or snowbush spanworm), is an occasional pest of ornamental plants whose gregarious larvae feed on Euphorbiaceae.
Micropterigoidea
Mandibulate Archaic Moths
Micropterigoidea is a superfamily of moths containing a single family, Micropterigidae, with approximately 20 living genera. These insects are considered the most primitive extant lineage of Lepidoptera, retaining ancestral characteristics lost in other moth groups. They are commonly called "mandibulate archaic moths" due to their retention of functional chewing mandibles in the adult stage—a trait absent in nearly all other Lepidoptera.
Moneilema annulatum
cactus beetle, ambulated cactus beetle
Moneilema annulatum is a flightless cactus beetle in the family Cerambycidae, first described by Thomas Say in 1824. Adults are found almost exclusively on opuntioid cacti (prickly pears and chollas), where they feed on plant tissues and flowers. Larvae tunnel within cactus stems, often causing visible damage in the form of hardened black exudate. The species occurs across western North America from the Great Plains to the Pacific coast.

fairy longhorn moths
Nemophora is a genus of micro-moths in the family Adelidae, commonly known as fairy longhorn moths. Species are characterized by metallic coloration and exceptionally long antennae, particularly in males. The genus is distributed across Europe, Asia, and other regions, with species occupying diverse habitats including meadows, peat bogs, and gardens. Several species have specialized larval host plant associations and are considered indicators of well-preserved traditional habitats.
Neocrania
Neocrania is a genus of small moths in the family Eriocraniidae, established by Davis in 1978. The genus is monotypic, containing only Neocrania bifasciata, a species endemic to the Coast Ranges of southern California. Adults are diurnal and active in early June, with a single generation annually. The larvae are leaf miners on Quercus chrysolepis (canyon live oak).
Nicrophorus marginatus
margined sexton beetle, margined burying beetle, red and black burying beetle
Nicrophorus marginatus is a burying beetle in the family Silphidae, described by Fabricius in 1801. Adults are medium-sized beetles, 12–28 mm in length, with distinctive shiny black bodies and red-orange elytral bands. The species exhibits extreme physiological sensitivity to desiccation, losing 1–5% body mass per hour in low humidity conditions, yet maintains diurnal activity patterns and extends into arid habitats through behavioral thermoregulation. Like other Nicrophorus species, it engages in complex biparental care, burying small vertebrate carcasses and provisioning larvae with regurgitated, pre-digested food.
Notiophilus aeneus
Brassy Big-eyed Beetle
Notiophilus aeneus, commonly called the brassy big-eyed beetle, is a small ground beetle in the family Carabidae. Adults measure approximately 5–6 mm in length. The species is characterized by its dark coloration with a brassy metallic tinge and notably large eyes. It occurs in North America and exhibits diurnal activity during spring and summer months.
Notiophilus semistriatus
semi-striate big-eyed beetle
Notiophilus semistriatus is a ground beetle in the family Carabidae, commonly known as the semi-striate big-eyed beetle. It exhibits wing dimorphism, with populations containing both fully-winged (macropterous) and short-winged (brachypterous) adults. The species is primarily active during daylight hours. It occupies a range of open and edge habitats across northern North America and extends into Russia.
Notiophilus sylvaticus
forest big-eyed beetle
Notiophilus sylvaticus is a ground beetle in the family Carabidae, commonly known as the forest big-eyed beetle. It is native to North America and exhibits wing dimorphism, with populations containing both short-winged (brachypterous) and long-winged (macropterous) individuals. Adults are gregarious and primarily active during daylight hours. The species inhabits open forests and meadows.
Novomessor
Desert Long-legged Ants
Novomessor is a genus of desert-dwelling ants comprising three species. The genus was described by Carlo Emery in 1915, treated as a synonym of Aphaenogaster for decades, and reinstated as valid in 2015 based on phylogenetic evidence. Species inhabit arid regions of the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, where they function as important granivores and exhibit sophisticated foraging behaviors including cooperative prey retrieval and multimodal navigation.
Oiceoptoma noveboracense
Margined Carrion Beetle
A medium-sized carrion beetle in the family Silphidae, distinguished by orange-red margins on the pronotum. Adults are diurnal and active primarily from spring through fall in deciduous forest habitats. The species produces one generation per year, with larvae and adults feeding on carrion and preying on fly larvae. It has forensic importance for estimating postmortem intervals based on succession patterns.
Oreoneta
A genus of dwarf spiders (family Linyphiidae) established in 1894, comprising approximately 30 species distributed across cold-temperate and Arctic regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Ourapterygini is a large tribe of geometer moths within the subfamily Ennominae, described in 1846. The tribe is particularly diverse in the Neotropics and is considered the youngest tribe of its subfamily based on phylogenetic evidence. Members are distinguished by characteristic asymmetrical processes of the anellus, a derived trait present at least seasonally. Many species exhibit butterfly-like appearance and partially diurnal behavior, with conspicuous coloration that may serve as aposematic warning signals.
Oxymerus aculeatus
Oxymerus aculeatus is a medium to large-sized longhorned beetle (Cerambycidae) in the tribe Trachyderini, characterized by bright coloration and diurnal activity. The species was described by Dupont in 1838 and is the most widely distributed member of its exclusively Neotropical genus, ranging from Nicaragua and the West Indies south to Bolivia and Uruguay. Several subspecies have been described, with the nominate subspecies O. a. aculeatus occurring throughout central, eastern, and southeastern Brazil. Like most cerambycids, larvae presumably develop in dead or dying wood, though specific host plants remain undocumented. The species has been detected in Florida, raising concerns about potential establishment and economic impact as an invasive wood-boring pest.
Paederus
Whiplash Beetles
Paederus is a large genus of rove beetles comprising over 600 species. Members are distinguished from most other rove beetles by bright aposematic coloration, diurnal activity, and attraction to lights. Several species contain pederin, a potent vesicant toxin produced by endosymbiotic bacteria, which causes paederus dermatitis when beetle hemolymph contacts human skin. Both larvae and adults are predatory on other insects.
Paranthrene dollii
Doll's clearwing moth, cottonwood clearwing borer, poplar borer moth, Doll's clearwing, cottonwood clearwing, poplar borer
Paranthrene dollii is a clearwing moth in the family Sesiidae, native to North America. Adults are active from March through October and may produce multiple flights per season. The species is notable for its wasp-mimicking appearance and its larval association with poplar and willow trees, earning it the common name 'cottonwood clearwing borer.'
Pasimachus sublaevis
Moderately Smooth Warrior Beetle
Pasimachus sublaevis is a large ground beetle in the family Carabidae, commonly known as the Moderately Smooth Warrior Beetle. The species occurs across North America and is one of several species in the genus Pasimachus, which are notable for their robust build, large mandibles, and active predatory behavior. Warrior beetles are among the more conspicuous carabids in open habitats due to their size and diurnal activity patterns.
Perichares adela
Green-backed Ruby-eye
A Neotropical skipper butterfly in the family Hesperiidae, commonly known as the Green-backed Ruby-eye. The species exhibits the rapid, darting flight characteristic of skippers and is associated with forested and edge habitats in its range. Adults are diurnal and have been documented in multiple countries across Central and South America.
Petrophila fulicalis
Feather-edged Petrophila
Petrophila fulicalis is a crambid moth described by James Brackenridge Clemens in 1860. It belongs to a species group that has been taxonomically clarified using citizen science data, distinguishing it from similar species P. confusalis and P. bella. Adults are diurnal and often found near running water. The species has a broad North American distribution with two distinct population centers: eastern records from the Great Lakes and Appalachian regions, and western records from the southwestern United States and northern Mexico.
Peucetia viridans
Green Lynx Spider
Peucetia viridans is the largest North American lynx spider, distinguished by its bright green coloration and active hunting behavior. Unlike web-building spiders, it pursues prey with agility comparable to jumping spiders, pouncing in a cat-like manner that inspired its common name. Females exhibit extended maternal care, guarding egg sacs and early spiderlings while reducing their own foraging activity. The species occupies a notable position in agricultural ecosystems, where it preys on both crop pests and beneficial insects.
Photinus cookii
Cook's firefly
Photinus cookii, known as Cook's firefly, is a small day-active firefly species in the beetle family Lampyridae. Adults measure 5–7 mm and lack functional bioluminescent lanterns, a distinctive departure from typical nocturnal fireflies. The species was described by John Wagener Green in 1956 and named in honor of Carl Cook, who collected the holotype in Kentucky. It is one of the few known non-flashing fireflies, believed to locate mates using pheromones rather than light signals.
Photinus indictus
Silent Firefly
Photinus indictus, commonly known as the silent firefly, is a diurnal firefly species in the beetle family Lampyridae. Adults are active during daylight hours and lack the bioluminescent lanterns characteristic of most fireflies, earning both its common name and specific epithet (Latin for "unspoken"). The species is found in eastern North America, particularly the Great Lakes region. Adults communicate through airborne pheromones rather than light signals.
Phyllophaga cribrosa
Ribbed Phyllophaga
Phyllophaga cribrosa is a flightless scarab beetle in the subfamily Melolonthinae, distinguished from most congeners by its diurnal, ground-dwelling habits. Adults are recognized by their oval, convex, shining black bodies with a distinctive cribrose (sieve-like) surface texture and longitudinal elytral furrows. The species occurs in dry habitats across the south-central United States and northern Mexico, where it has been documented as an occasional agricultural pest.
Pieris rapae
small white, cabbage white, cabbage butterfly, small cabbage white, imported cabbageworm (larval stage), white butterfly (New Zealand)
Pieris rapae is a small to medium-sized butterfly in the family Pieridae, native to Europe and Asia and introduced to North America, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. Adults are white with black wing markings; females bear two additional black spots on the forewings. The species is a significant agricultural pest in its larval stage, known as the imported cabbageworm, feeding on cruciferous crops. It has been extensively studied for its responses to climate change, with long-term data showing progressively earlier spring emergence in North America.
Plionoma
Plionoma is a genus of longhorned beetles (family Cerambycidae) in the tribe Trachyderini, containing three species: P. basalis, P. rubens, and P. suturalis. Members of this genus are notable for their bright coloration, diurnal activity, and strong association with flowers. P. suturalis has been documented feeding on mesquite flowers and exhibits bimodal seasonal activity, with adults appearing in spring, disappearing during summer, and reappearing in fall. The genus occurs primarily in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, with P. suturalis representing a significant northeastern range extension into Oklahoma.
Plionoma rubens
Plionoma rubens is a species of longhorned beetle in the family Cerambycidae, described by Thomas L. Casey in 1891. It belongs to the tribe Trachyderini, a group known for bright coloration, diurnal activity, and attraction to flowers. The species occurs in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, with records from Texas west to California. Like other members of its genus, adults are associated with mesquite and other woody legumes.
Plionoma suturalis
Plionoma suturalis is a longhorned beetle in the tribe Trachyderini, characterized by bright coloration and diurnal flower-visiting behavior. The species was described by LeConte in 1858 and occurs from Texas west to California and south into northern Mexico. Its 2013 discovery in northwestern Oklahoma represented a significant northeastern range extension of over 200 miles from the nearest previous records in north-central Texas. Adults exhibit bimodal seasonal activity, appearing in spring, disappearing during summer, and reappearing in fall.
Podabrus
soldier beetle
Podabrus is a genus of soldier beetles (family Cantharidae) found in California. Members are elongate beetles with soft, flexible wing covers that give rise to the common name 'leatherwings.' The genus is one of approximately 11 genera of soldier beetles occurring in California, with about 160 species total in the state. Adults are diurnal and frequently observed on flowers or foliage.
Podabrus quadratus
soldier beetle
Podabrus quadratus is a soldier beetle in the family Cantharidae, native to North America. Like other members of its genus, it is recognized by its elongate body and contrasting coloration of dark brown to black with orange, red, or yellow markings. The species has been observed actively hunting aphids and other soft-bodied insects on vegetation. Adults are diurnal and frequently encountered on flowers or foliage infested with honeydew-producing insects.
Poecilanthrax willistonii
Williston's bee fly
Poecilanthrax willistonii is a North American bee fly in the family Bombyliidae. The genus Poecilanthrax is strictly North American in distribution, with the greatest abundance of species and individuals found in the Great Basin region. Like other members of the genus, the larvae develop as parasites inside caterpillars of cutworms and armyworms (family Noctuidae). Adults are typically found in arid and semi-arid habitats, often associated with flowering plants where they feed on nectar.
Prionini
Prionini is a tribe of large, robust longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae: Prioninae) characterized by their substantial body size, strong mandibles, and often somber coloration. Members of this tribe are distinguished from other Prioninae by their relatively small compound eyes, an adaptation associated with diurnal activity patterns. The tribe includes several genera distributed across the Holarctic and Oriental regions, with taxonomic revisions ongoing due to the group's morphological diversity and historical classification challenges.
