The genus contains at least three described species: Parabacillus coloradus, P. hesperus, and P. palmeri. These stick insects are native to western North America and are characterized by their cryptic, twig-like appearance. They are seldom encountered due to their excellent camouflage.
Parabacillus hesperus
western short-horn walkingstick, western short-horned walkingstick
Parabacillus hesperus is a stick insect species in the family Heteronemiidae, commonly known as the western short-horn walkingstick. It exhibits strong crypsis, blending with vegetation to avoid detection by predators. The species has been documented across the western United States with recent range extensions into the Pacific Northwest.
Parvindela cursitans
Ant-like Tiger Beetle
Parvindela cursitans, commonly known as the Ant-like Tiger Beetle, is a small, flightless tiger beetle species distributed across the central United States. Adults measure 6–8 mm in length and exhibit cryptic bronze coloration with green pitting on the elytra. The species inhabits bottomland forest habitats with sandy loam soils, particularly along major river systems. Unlike most tiger beetles, it is restricted to shaded forest understories rather than open, sunny areas. The species was historically rare in Missouri, known from only a single specimen until 2010, but subsequent surveys have revealed robust populations along the Mississippi River corridor.
Pauropus
Pauropus is a genus of minute myriapods in the class Pauropoda. These animals are among the smallest soil-dwelling arthropods, measuring less than 2 mm in length. Pauropus species are characterized by branched antennae and a reduced number of legs compared to other myriapod classes. The genus has been documented across multiple continents including Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
Pediodectes daedalus
Pediodectes daedalus is a species of shieldback katydid in the family Tettigoniidae. The genus Pediodectes comprises wingless or short-winged katydids distributed across the Great Plains of North America. Adults of this genus are typically found in prairie and grassland habitats, often associated with herbaceous vegetation. Species in Pediodectes are known for their cryptic coloration, though some individuals may exhibit more contrasting markings. The genus is taxonomically challenging, with species identification often requiring examination of morphological details beyond external coloration.
Phasmida
stick insects, walking sticks, stick-bugs, phasmids, ghost insects, leaf insects
Phasmida is an order of insects comprising approximately 3,000 valid species worldwide, grouped into 523 genera and 13 families. Members are renowned for extreme cryptic morphology resembling sticks, twigs, or leaves, with elongated bodies and appendages that match host vegetation in color and texture. The order exhibits remarkable size variation, from small species to the longest insects known, with some exceeding 18 inches in length. The group was formerly classified within Orthoptera but now constitutes its own order based on distinct morphological and molecular characteristics. The name derives from Greek 'phasma' (apparition, ghost), referencing their uncanny resemblance to inanimate plant parts.
Placonotus nitens
lined flat bark beetle
Placonotus nitens is a species of lined flat bark beetle in the family Laemophloeidae, first described by LeConte in 1854. It is a member of the genus Placonotus, which comprises beetles adapted to living under bark. The species is known from North America, where it inhabits forested environments.
Polyxenus
Polyxenus is a genus of bristly millipedes in the order Polyxenida, the sole extant genus of the family Polyxenidae. These small millipedes are characterized by their distinctive tufts of setae (bristles) and are notable for being among the most morphologically derived millipedes, having lost many ancestral diplopod traits. The genus contains at least 30 valid species and has a broad geographic distribution across multiple continents. Polyxenus species are frequently found in association with ants, serving as either symbionts or specialized prey.
Ponera exotica
Southern Porthole Ant
Ponera exotica is a small ant species in the subfamily Ponerinae, native to North America. Despite its species epithet suggesting foreign origin, it is now interpreted as a native species rather than an introduced exotic. It exhibits a patchy distribution across the conterminous United States and has been collected primarily through subterranean sampling methods.
Proceratium crassicorne
Fat Curltail Ant
Proceratium crassicorne is a rarely encountered ant species described by Emery in 1895. It belongs to the genus Proceratium, a group of specialized predatory ants known for their distinctive elongated petiole and furtive foraging habits. The species epithet 'crassicorne' refers to its notably thick antennae. Like other members of its genus, it is likely a cryptic predator with specific habitat requirements, though detailed biological studies remain limited.
Proceratium croceum
Proceratium croceum is a small, cryptic ant species in the subfamily Proceratiinae. It belongs to a genus of specialized predators that exhibit unusual foraging behaviors. The species is known from limited observations in the eastern United States. Like other Proceratium species, it likely possesses a distinctive elongated petiole and modified mandibles for capturing specific prey.
Proceratium pergandei
Pergandei-clade Hairy Curltail Ants
Proceratium pergandei is a species of ant in the subfamily Proceratiinae, endemic to the Central and Eastern United States. It belongs to a genus of small, cryptic ants commonly known as 'curltail ants' for their distinctive abdominal morphology. Members of the Pergandei-clade within Proceratium are characterized by dense pilosity (hairiness) compared to other congeners.
Prokoeneniidae
microscorpions, microwhip scorpions
Prokoeneniidae is a family of microscorpions (order Palpigradi) established by Condé in 1996. The family contains at least two genera—*Prokoenenia* and *Triadokoenenia*—with approximately seven described species. These minute arachnids are among the least studied of all arachnid orders, reflecting their cryptic lifestyle and small size.
Pseudocellus dorotheae
hooded tickspider
Pseudocellus dorotheae is a species of hooded tickspider in the order Ricinulei, first described from Texas in 1939. Ricinuleids are a small, reclusive order of arachnids characterized by a retractable hood (cucullus) covering the mouthparts. This species represents one of the few described members of the genus Pseudocellus in North America. Like other ricinuleids, it is poorly known due to its cryptic habits and limited collection records.
Pseudoscorpiones
pseudoscorpions, false scorpions, book scorpions
Pseudoscorpions are tiny arachnids, most under 5 mm in length, superficially resembling scorpions but lacking a stinger and elongated tail. They are among the oldest terrestrial colonizers, with fossils dating to the Middle Devonian (ca. 390 million years ago). Despite their ancient lineage, they exhibit remarkable morphological stasis, with even Devonian fossils appearing modern. Most species inhabit concealed microhabitats such as beneath bark, in leaf litter, soil, caves, or mammal nests, making them seldom encountered despite being fairly common. They are predatory, seizing small invertebrate prey with venomous pincer-like pedipalps.
Pugettia
kelp crabs
Pugettia is a genus of marine kelp crabs in the family Epialtidae, distributed across the North Pacific from North America to East Asia. Species inhabit shallow subtidal zones, primarily associated with macroalgal habitats including kelp beds, Sargassum stands, and red algal turfs. Many species exhibit ontogenetic habitat shifts, with juveniles and smaller individuals occupying deeper algal turfs while larger adults migrate to shallower macroalgal beds. The genus includes approximately 25 extant species plus one fossil species, with several species serving as important subjects for studies of crab growth, reproduction, and habitat ecology.

Scotoleon nigrescens is a species of antlion in the family Myrmeleontidae, order Neuroptera. It was described by Stange in 1970. Antlions in the genus Scotoleon are found in North America, and adults are characterized by their delicate, lacy wings and cryptic coloration that allows them to blend seamlessly against vegetation. The larvae are predatory, living in soil or sand and feeding on small insects.
Scotoleon nigrilabris
Scotoleon nigrilabris is a species of antlion in the family Myrmeleontidae, distributed across Central America and North America. Like other antlions, it undergoes complete metamorphosis from a predatory larva to a delicate, lacy-winged adult. The genus Scotoleon is distinguished by adult males having a notably elongated abdomen with bracket-like claspers. Adults are cryptic and frequently observed among tall grasses at dusk.
Scudderia pistillata
Broad-winged Bush Katydid
Scudderia pistillata is a species of bush katydid in the family Tettigoniidae, commonly known as the broad-winged bush katydid. It is native to North America and is one of eight recognized species in the genus Scudderia found in the United States and southern Canada. Like other bush katydids, it is primarily nocturnal and well-camouflaged in vegetation.
Sphaeropsocus
Sphaeropsocus is a genus of small psocopterans in the family Sphaeropsocidae, first described by Hagen in 1882. It belongs to the suborder Troctomorpha, a group of barklice and booklice characterized by specialized mouthpart structures. The genus is part of a small family containing few described species, most of which are rarely encountered. Members of this genus are minute insects associated with dead plant material and organic debris.
Sphindus
cryptic slime mold beetles
Sphindus is a genus of small beetles in the family Sphindidae, commonly known as cryptic slime mold beetles. The genus contains at least four described species distributed across the Holarctic region. These beetles are specialized associates of slime molds (Myxomycetes), though specific ecological details remain poorly documented for most species.
Sphodros
purseweb spiders

Seven species are recognized, distributed across the United States, Canada, and Mexico. These spiders are known for constructing distinctive purse-shaped webs attached to tree trunks and root systems.
Sphodros niger
Black purse-web spider, Black Purseweb Spider
Sphodros niger is a mygalomorph spider native to northeastern North America. Males reach approximately 11 mm in body length (29 mm with legs extended) and possess distinctive chocolate-brown legs contrasting with an otherwise black body. Females were not described until 1980, 138 years after the species was first named, due to their sedentary tube-dwelling behavior. The species is listed as a special concern species in Connecticut and ranked as vulnerable in Virginia.
Steiroxys trilineatus
Three-lined Shieldback, Three-lined Camel Cricket
Steiroxys trilineatus is a shieldback katydid native to western North America, recognized by the three pale longitudinal stripes running along its dorsal surface. This flightless, ground-dwelling species inhabits grassland and sagebrush steppe ecosystems, where it occupies a cryptic lifestyle among vegetation and litter. Adults are active during summer months, with males producing songs via tegminal stridulation to attract mates. The species has been documented from the Great Basin through the Rocky Mountain region, with populations adapted to semi-arid conditions.
Stenamma

Tenebroides nanus is a species of bark-gnawing beetle in the family Trogossitidae. The specific epithet "nanus" (Latin for "dwarf") suggests small body size relative to congeners. As a member of Trogossitidae, it likely inhabits forest environments where it feeds on fungi, decaying wood, or other organic matter associated with dead or dying trees. The genus Tenebroides contains numerous species primarily distributed across the Northern Hemisphere, with many species poorly studied due to their cryptic habits.
Terapus
Terapus is a genus of clown beetles in the family Histeridae, established by Marseul in 1863. It belongs to the subfamily Haeteriinae, a group characterized by associations with ants and termites. The genus is poorly known, with very few observations and limited published information on its biology. Members of Haeteriinae are generally myrmecophilous or termitophilous, living as inquilines in ant or termite colonies.
Tetratoma
Tetratoma is a genus of polypore fungus beetles comprising approximately 25 described species. These small beetles are associated with wood-decaying fungi and are members of the family Tetratomidae within the superfamily Tenebrionoidea. The genus was established by Fabricius in 1790 and is primarily distributed across northern and temperate regions of the Palearctic.
Tetrigidae
pygmy grasshoppers, groundhoppers, pygmy devils, grouse locusts
Tetrigidae is an ancient family of minute orthopterans with over 2,000 described species and a fossil record extending more than 230 million years. Members are characterized by an elongated pronotum that extends backward over the abdomen, often reaching the wing tips. The family exhibits exceptional morphological diversity, particularly in tropical regions where species display elaborate pronotal modifications including leaf mimicry, spines, and horns. Despite their ancient lineage and species richness, Tetrigidae remain among the most understudied orthopteran families.
Thecesternus
bison dung weevils, bison snout beetles
Thecesternus is a genus of flightless, nocturnal broad-nosed weevils comprising approximately seven described species. These small beetles, measuring about six millimeters in length, are known for their truncated rostrum and habit of sheltering under bison dung in grassland habitats. The genus has been studied primarily through *T. hirsutus*, which was evaluated as a potential biological control agent for the invasive weed *Parthenium hysterophorus*.
Thecesternus hirsutus
bison dung weevil, bison snout beetle
Thecesternus hirsutus is a small, flightless weevil in the family Curculionidae, native to North America. It was first described by Pierce in 1909 and gained scientific attention through evaluation as a potential biological control agent for Parthenium hysterophorus in Australia. The species is nocturnal, spends winter as larvae underground feeding on plant roots, and is known for its cryptic appearance and death-feigning behavior when disturbed.
Thecesternus humeralis
Thecesternus humeralis is a species of broad-nosed weevil in the family Curculionidae, described by Say in 1826. It is one of seven species in the genus Thecesternus, commonly known as "bison dung weevils" or "bison snout beetles" due to their historical association with seeking shelter under bison dung. The species is found in North America and shares the genus-wide traits of being small, flightless, nocturnal, and cryptic.
