Bythotrephes longimanus
Spiny Water Flea, Spiny Waterflea
Bythotrephes longimanus is a predatory planktonic cladoceran crustacean native to northern Europe and Asia that has become a significant invasive species in North America since its introduction to the Great Lakes in the 1980s. Adults reach up to 15 mm in length, with females growing substantially larger than males. The species exhibits cyclic parthenogenesis and produces distinctive morphological forms depending on reproductive mode and season. Its invasion has caused substantial ecological disruption through direct predation on native zooplankton and non-lethal effects that alter prey behavior and population dynamics.
Calanidae
Calanidae is the largest family of calanoid copepods, containing ecologically dominant genera including Calanus, potentially the most abundant metazoan genus on Earth. Members inhabit marine environments from surface waters to depths exceeding 400 m, with distributions spanning polar, temperate, and tropical oceans. The family exhibits significant vertical stratification and seasonal abundance patterns, with some species performing ontogenetic vertical migrations for overwintering. Calanidae species play critical roles in marine food webs as primary consumers and prey for fish and higher trophic levels.
Carpias minutus
Sargasso Witcher
Carpias minutus is a marine isopod species in the family Janiridae, commonly known as the Sargasso Witcher. The species was described by Richardson in 1902. It is associated with the Sargasso Sea ecosystem, a unique pelagic habitat in the North Atlantic Ocean characterized by floating Sargassum seaweed. The species has been recorded from Bermuda and coastal Brazil (Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo states).
Conchoderma auritum
rabbit-ear barnacle
Conchoderma auritum, commonly known as the rabbit-ear barnacle, is a pedunculate barnacle in the family Lepadidae. It is primarily known as a whale-associated barnacle, attaching to the shells of other barnacle species such as Coronula diadema on cetaceans. The species has also been documented on large pelagic fish including black marlin, representing a non-mammalian host association. It possesses distinctive tubular ear-shaped structures on the capitulum and feeds using short, thick-segmented cirri adapted for strong currents.
Diaptomidae
Diaptomidae is a family of freshwater pelagic copepods comprising approximately 50 genera. Members are the most widespread copepods in lentic inland waters of the Palearctic region. The family contains two subfamilies: Diaptominae and Paradiaptominae, with the latter consisting almost exclusively of African taxa. Diaptomids exhibit high species richness in tropical and Mediterranean regions, with numerous endemic species.
Halobates
sea skaters, ocean striders
Halobates is a genus of marine water striders comprising over 40 species, representing the only insects known to inhabit the open ocean surface. Five species are truly pelagic, living far from land on calm tropical and subtropical seas, while most species occupy sheltered coastal marine habitats. These insects possess specialized adaptations for life on the high seas, including hydrofuge body hairs, reduced or absent wings, and modified middle legs that function as paddles for propulsion. They are predators that feed on organisms trapped in the sea surface microlayer, and their unique ecology makes them significant components of the neustonic community.
Halobates micans
Common Sea Skater
Halobates micans is a wingless marine water strider and the only pelagic insect genus member found in the Atlantic Ocean. It is circumglobal in tropical and subtropical seas, living exclusively at the sea-air interface. Adults measure 3.6–4.5 mm with males larger than females. The species exhibits remarkable adaptations for open ocean life including water-repellent body hairs, UV-absorbent cuticle, and exceptional skating agility. It is the most widespread Halobates species, occurring from approximately 40°N to 40°S in the Atlantic and also present in the Indian and Pacific Oceans.
Halobates sericeus
Pacific pelagic water strider, Silvery Sea Skater
Halobates sericeus is an oceanic sea skater in the family Gerridae, one of the few insects adapted to life on the open sea. It inhabits pelagic marine environments across the Pacific Ocean and adjacent regions. The species exhibits photoperiod-dependent aggregation behavior, with adults and late-instar larvae forming more frequent and longer-lasting groups under short-day conditions compared to long-day conditions.
Hyperia
Hyperia is a genus of amphipod crustaceans in the family Hyperiidae, established by Latreille in 1823. Members of this genus are known for their parasitic or commensal associations with gelatinous zooplankton, particularly jellyfish (Cnidaria). The genus includes species such as Hyperia medusarum, which has been documented as a parasite of scyphozoan and hydrozoan medusae in the southeastern Atlantic Ocean.
Hyperiidae
Hyperiidae is a family of amphipod crustaceans established by Dana in 1852. Members of this family are exclusively marine and are characterized by their obligate associations with gelatinous zooplankton, including jellyfish (Scyphozoa) and ctenophores. The family contains eight recognized genera: Euthemisto, Hyperia, Hyperiella, Hyperoche, Laxohyperia, Parathemisto, Pegohyperia, and Themisto. These amphipods are frequently documented as parasites or associates of their gelatinous hosts in pelagic marine environments.
Hyperiidea
hyperiid amphipods
Hyperiidea is a suborder of exclusively marine amphipod crustaceans characterized by large eyes and a planktonic lifestyle. Unlike other amphipod suborders, they do not occur in freshwater. The group comprises approximately 284 species across 20-23 families. Most species are associated with gelatinous zooplankton as parasites or predators of salps and jellyfish, though some members such as Themisto gaudichaudii are free-swimming predators of copepods and other small planktonic animals.
Latreutes
Latreutes is a genus of marine shrimp in the family Hippolytidae. Species within this genus exhibit distinct reproductive strategies, with documented cases of consecutive breeding and seasonal reproductive peaks. Some species, such as L. fucorum, form mutualistic associations with pelagic Sargassum algae, while others inhabit benthic marine environments. The genus shows variation in habitat preference across species, from Sargassum-associated pelagic habitats to seagrass meadows and coastal waters.
Lepadidae
Goose Barnacles
A family of pedunculate (stalked) barnacles established by Charles Darwin in 1852, commonly known as goose barnacles. Comprises approximately five genera and over 20 described species. Members are exclusively marine, with worldwide distribution in warm temperate and tropical seas. The family includes the well-known genus Lepas (goose barnacles) and Conchoderma (whale barnacles).
Lepadiformes
stalked barnacles, goose barnacles
Lepadiformes is an order of stalked barnacles within the class Maxillopoda. Members possess a fleshy peduncle that attaches the capitulum (shell) to substrates, distinguishing them from sessile acorn barnacles. The order includes approximately nine extant families, with Lepadidae being the most species-rich. Many species are epibiotic, attaching to mobile marine hosts including crustaceans, elasmobranchs, and marine debris.
Lepas
Goose Barnacles
Lepas is a genus of goose barnacles in the family Lepadidae, comprising pelagic crustaceans that attach to floating substrates using a flexible stalk. The genus includes at least eight described species, with Lepas anatifera being among the most widely distributed and studied. Members of this genus are characterized by their stalked morphology and calcareous shell plates, representing a distinctive lineage within the barnacle group.
Oncaeidae
Oncaeidae is a family of microcopepods characterized by small body size, high abundance, and high species diversity across all ocean basins. The family was established by Giesbrecht in 1893 and comprises approximately 115 described species across seven genera. Members occur from surface waters to bathypelagic depths, exhibiting a life strategy fundamentally different from most other pelagic microcopepod families. Their ecological role in marine ecosystems remains incompletely understood despite their numerical importance.
Phronima
Phronima is a genus of small, deep-sea hyperiid amphipods found throughout the world's oceans except polar regions. These semitransparent pelagic crustaceans are technically parasitoids rather than parasites: females attack salps, hollow out their gelatinous tunicates to create protective 'barrels,' and rear their young inside these structures. The genus possesses extraordinary compound eyes adapted to detect blue-green wavelengths, enabling navigation in dim mid-ocean environments where bioluminescence serves as critical ecological signals. Phronima has gained cultural recognition as a possible inspiration for the Alien Queen design in the 1986 film 'Aliens.'
Pleuroncodes planipes
pelagic red crab, tuna crab, squat lobster, langostilla, benthic anomuran red crab
Pleuroncodes planipes is a pelagic and benthic anomuran red crab distributed across the eastern Pacific Ocean, from California to Panama. The species exhibits a complex life cycle with both pelagic and benthic phases: larvae and small individuals occupy open waters, while larger adults become exclusively benthic. It forms exceptionally dense aggregations on seamounts, with recorded densities up to 78 crabs/m² at depths of 355–385 m. The species tolerates hypoxic conditions (0.04 ml/l oxygen) and serves as a major prey item for large pelagic predators including yellowfin and skipjack tuna.
Portunus sayi
Sargassum Swimming Crab
Portunus sayi is a pelagic swimming crab endemic to floating Sargassum seaweed mats in the western Atlantic Ocean and Caribbean Sea. It exhibits specialized adaptations for swimming, including paddle-shaped fourth legs that enable rapid sideways movement. The species relies on chemical, visual, and tactile cues to locate and select host Sargassum patches, demonstrating strong host fidelity. Recent records from the Amazon continental shelf represent the northernmost observation in Brazilian waters, expanding its known range.
Pugettia
kelp crabs
Pugettia is a genus of marine kelp crabs in the family Epialtidae, distributed across the North Pacific from North America to East Asia. Species inhabit shallow subtidal zones, primarily associated with macroalgal habitats including kelp beds, Sargassum stands, and red algal turfs. Many species exhibit ontogenetic habitat shifts, with juveniles and smaller individuals occupying deeper algal turfs while larger adults migrate to shallower macroalgal beds. The genus includes approximately 25 extant species plus one fossil species, with several species serving as important subjects for studies of crab growth, reproduction, and habitat ecology.
