Pachydiplax
Blue Dasher
Pachydiplax is a genus of dragonflies in the family Libellulidae, containing at least one widespread North American species, Pachydiplax longipennis (Blue Dasher). These dragonflies are medium-sized skimmers characterized by blue coloration in mature males. The genus is notable for extensive research on territorial behavior, breeding dispersal, and agonistic interactions among males. Members are commonly found at freshwater habitats across their range.

Colourful Comb-footed Spiders
Parasteatoda is a genus of comb-footed spiders (family Theridiidae) first described by Allan Frost Archer in 1946. The genus name derives from Greek "para-" (near) combined with the related genus Steatoda. Species in this genus are characterized by a teardrop-shaped or nearly spherical abdomen with highly variable coloration, and possess the comb-footed spines on the fourth leg typical of theridiids. The genus contains 42 species and one subspecies as of October 2025, distributed primarily across the Old World with many species in Asia and New Guinea, though several have been introduced to the Americas and Europe through human commerce. The best-known member, Parasteatoda tepidariorum (Common House Spider), has become a significant model organism for evolutionary developmental biology research.

Parasteatoda tepidariorum, the common house spider, is a small cobweb-weaving spider native to the Americas that has achieved cosmopolitan distribution through human commerce. It is strongly synanthropic, rarely found outside human-built structures. Females measure 5–8 mm in body length, males 3.8–4.7 mm, with variable coloration from tan to nearly black. The species constructs irregular three-dimensional webs in dark corners of buildings and has become a model organism for developmental biology research due to its short lifecycle, ease of laboratory culture, and accessible embryology.

Peponapis is a genus of ground-nesting bees in the family Apidae, commonly known as squash bees. These solitary bees are specialized pollinators of plants in the family Cucurbitaceae, including squash, pumpkins, gourds, and cucumbers. The genus underwent rapid geographical expansion following the domestication and spread of cucurbit crops by humans. Peponapis pruinosa, the most studied species, has been used as a model organism for understanding the impacts of agricultural practices on ground-nesting bees and for assessing pesticide risk in agricultural soils.

The species has become a model organism for arachnid developmental biology and comparative genomics due to its ease of laboratory culture and continuous life cycle. Adults are generalist predators and scavengers that contribute to biological pest control in agricultural systems.

The species is a significant agricultural pest in its larval stage, known as the imported cabbageworm, feeding on cruciferous crops. It has been extensively studied for its responses to climate change, with long-term data showing progressively earlier spring emergence in North America.

Pimpla turionellae is a solitary idiobiont endoparasitoid wasp in the family Ichneumonidae. Females parasitize the larvae and pupae of lepidopteran hosts, particularly Galleria mellonella, by injecting venom that suppresses host immune responses before oviposition. The species has been extensively studied as a laboratory model organism due to its pharmacologically significant venom, which exhibits cytotoxic, immunomodulatory, and potential anticancer properties. It is widely distributed across Europe and has been introduced to other regions including the Azores.

The species was described by Auguste Forel in 1914.
