Chirocephalidae

Chirocephalidae is the second largest family of fairy shrimp (Anostraca), characterized by a reduced or vestigial maxilla, more than two setae on the fifth endite, divided pre-epipodites, and widely separated seminal vesicles. The family includes nine genera: Artemiopsis, Branchinectella, Chirocephalus, Dexteria (extinct), Eubranchipus, Linderiella, Parartemiopsis, Polyartemia, and Polyartemiella. Former families Linderiellidae and Polyartemiidae are now included within Chirocephalidae. Most species are distributed in the Holarctic region.

Dendrocephalus is a genus of fairy shrimp (Anostraca) in the family Thamnocephalidae, distributed across South and North America. The genus is characterized by a distinctive antenna-like frontal appendage arising between the second antennae and the eyestalks. It comprises approximately 17 species arranged in two subgenera: Dendrocephalus (South American species) and Dendrocephalinus (North American species). Several species have been described recently, with ongoing taxonomic work revealing intra-populational polymorphism in frontal appendage morphology.

Eulimnadia is a genus of small freshwater branchiopods commonly known as clam shrimp. The genus is notable for its rare androdioecious mating system, where populations consist of males and hermaphrodites but lack pure females. This reproductive strategy has persisted for an estimated 24–180 million years across multiple speciation events, making it one of the most stable examples of androdioecy known in animals. Species are distinguished primarily by the morphology of their resting eggs (cysts), which show distinctive sculpturing patterns. The genus contains approximately 13–25 described species with a cosmopolitan distribution across every continent except Antarctica.

Signal Crayfish
The signal crayfish is a large North American freshwater crayfish introduced to Europe in the 1960s to replace declining native fisheries. It has become one of the most ecologically impactful invasive decapods in Europe, outcompeting native crayfish and serving as a carrier of crayfish plague (Aphanomyces astaci). The species establishes self-sustaining populations rapidly, with six age cohorts documented within a few years of introduction. It shows sex- and size-specific coloration patterns, with males displaying more saturated and brighter ventral claw surfaces than females, suggesting a role in intraspecific communication.

Slough Crayfish, Deceitful Crayfish
Procambarus fallax is a freshwater crayfish native to peninsular Florida and southern Georgia, USA, where it inhabits tributaries of the Satilla River. The species is notable as the sexual parental species of the parthenogenetic Marmorkrebs (marbled crayfish), which originated as a single lineage from P. fallax through apomictic parthenogenesis. While P. fallax reproduces sexually with separate males and females, its parthenogenetic derivative has achieved global distribution through the aquarium trade and exhibits high invasive potential due to single-female founding capability.
