Mescalero Shieldback
Plagiostira mescaleroensis is a species of shield-backed katydid in the family Tettigoniidae, first described by Tinkham in 1960. It is endemic to the Mescalero Sands region of southeastern New Mexico, where it inhabits sand dune ecosystems. The species belongs to a genus characterized by distinctive morphological adaptations to arid environments. Like other members of Tettigoniidae, it is nocturnal and possesses sound-producing capabilities, though specific behavioral details remain poorly documented.
Pogonomyrmex tenuispinus
Pogonomyrmex tenuispinus is a species of harvester ant in the genus Pogonomyrmex. Like other members of this genus, it is a seed-collecting ant native to arid regions. The species was described by Auguste Forel in 1914. As a harvester ant, it likely participates in seed dispersal and ecosystem engineering through nest construction, though specific ecological studies for this species are limited.

pottsorum
Polyphylla pottsorum is a species of scarab beetle in the family Scarabaeidae. It is a member of the diverse genus Polyphylla, commonly known as lined June beetles, which are characterized by their large size and distinctive antennae. The species was described by Hardy in 1978.
Prionus palparis
Prionus palparis is a species of longhorn beetle in the family Cerambycidae, first described by Thomas Say in 1824. It belongs to the subfamily Prioninae, a group of large, robust beetles commonly known as prionids or sawyers. The species has been recorded from sand dune habitats in the southwestern United States, particularly in New Mexico. Like other members of the genus Prionus, males are attracted to prionic acid, a sex pheromone component used in field studies to detect and collect specimens.
Protogygia pectinata
Protogygia pectinata is a noctuid moth described by Lafontaine in 2004. It is known exclusively from White Sands National Park in Otero County, New Mexico, where it inhabits the distinctive gypsum dune ecosystem. The species name 'pectinata' refers to comb-like structures, likely describing a diagnostic morphological feature of the adult moth. Very few observations exist, reflecting either genuine rarity or limited survey effort in this restricted habitat.
Pseudomarimatha flava
A small noctuid moth described in 2010, known only from a restricted range in the southwestern United States. The species epithet "flava" (yellow) likely refers to coloration, though specific details of appearance remain poorly documented in published literature.
Purpuricenus opacus
Purpuricenus opacus is a species of longhorned beetle in the family Cerambycidae, described by Knull in 1937. It is considered a west Texas specialty that has been recently documented from oak in the Lincoln National Forest of Eddy County, New Mexico, expanding its known range beyond Texas. The species is associated with oak woodlands in pinyon/oak/juniper habitats.
Saprinus laciniatus
Saprinus laciniatus is a species of clown beetle (family Histeridae) described by Casey in 1916. It belongs to the subfamily Saprininae, a group of small, predatory beetles commonly associated with carrion and decomposing animal matter. The genus Saprinus is widespread and diverse, with species typically found in habitats rich in decaying organic material where they prey on other insects.
Scaphinotus kelloggi
Kellogg's Snail-eating Beetle
Scaphinotus kelloggi is a species of ground beetle in the family Carabidae, first described by Dury in 1912. It is one of the 'snail hunter' carabids in the genus Scaphinotus, a group characterized by large size, powerful mandibles, and specialized predation on mollusks. The species is known from New Mexico, where it inhabits canyon environments with streams or rivers. Adults are brachypterous (short-winged), a trait common in this genus that reflects their ground-dwelling, non-dispersing lifestyle.
Schinia sanrafaeli
Schinia sanrafaeli is a small noctuid moth described by Opler in 2004. The species is known from a restricted range in the southwestern United States, specifically Utah and western New Mexico. With a wingspan of 20–21 mm, it is among the smaller members of the genus Schinia. Like other Schinia species, adults likely visit flowers for nectar and rest on host plants.
Schinia zuni
Schinia zuni is a small moth in the family Noctuidae, first described by McElvare in 1950. The species is known from a limited number of records in the southwestern United States, specifically Arizona and New Mexico. Adults have a wingspan of approximately 26 mm. Like other members of the genus Schinia, this species likely exhibits flower-associated behavior, though specific biological details remain poorly documented due to its rarity.
Scolops socorroensis
Scolops socorroensis is a planthopper species in the family Dictyopharidae, described by Lawson and Beamer in 1930. Like other members of the genus Scolops, it possesses a distinctive elongated head projection resembling a horn. The species is known from New Mexico, USA. Very little is known about its specific biology.
Scolops viridis
Green Dictyopharid Planthopper
Scolops viridis is a planthopper species in the family Dictyopharidae, first described by Ball in 1902. It belongs to the infraorder Fulgoromorpha, a group known for their distinctive head structures and jumping abilities. The species is recorded from the southwestern United States including Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, and Texas. As a member of the Dictyopharidae, it shares family-level characteristics of having an elongated, often enlarged head structure.
Scopula benitaria
Scopula benitaria is a small geometrid moth first described from North America in 1913. It is one of many species in the diverse genus Scopula, commonly known as wave moths due to the wavy transverse lines on their wings. The species has been recorded from the southwestern United States, particularly New Mexico and Texas. Like other members of the family Geometridae, its larvae are likely 'inchworms' with reduced prolegs, though specific details of its biology remain poorly documented.
Sparkia immacula
Sparkia immacula is a noctuid moth and the sole member of its genus. It is found in the southwestern United States, specifically in Arizona and New Mexico. The genus was established by Augustus Radcliffe Grote in 1883. Very little biological information is available for this species.
Sphenophorus aequalis ochreus
clay-colored billbug
Sphenophorus aequalis ochreus is a subspecies of the clay-colored billbug, a weevil in the family Curculionidae. Billbugs are significant turfgrass and agricultural pests whose larvae bore into plant stems, roots, and crowns. This subspecies has been documented in association with saltmarsh bulrush stands near alkaline lake margins in New Mexico, where adults were observed walking, mating, and burrowing into soil at the base of plants. The species complex presents identification challenges due to morphological similarities among related billbug taxa.
Stenocorus copei
Stenocorus copei is a species of longhorned beetle in the family Cerambycidae, described by Linsley and Chemsak in 1972. It belongs to the subfamily Lepturinae and tribe Rhagiini. The species is considered rare and has been collected in high-elevation coniferous forests of the southwestern United States. Field observations indicate it is attracted to sweet red wine-baited traps hung in Gambel oak (Quercus gambelii) along the margins of alpine coniferous forest.
Stenopodius martini
Stenopodius martini is a species of leaf beetle in the family Chrysomelidae, described by Blaisdell in 1939. It belongs to the subfamily Cassidinae, a group commonly known as tortoise beetles or hispine beetles. The species is known from the southwestern United States. Its food plant remains unknown, though adults have been collected on Sphaeralcea species.
Sympistis osiris
Sympistis osiris is a moth in the family Noctuidae, described by James T. Troubridge in 2008. The species is known from New Mexico and has a wingspan of 30–34 mm. As a member of the large genus Sympistis, it belongs to a diverse group of noctuid moths found primarily in North America.
