Adelpha fessonia
Band-celled Sister, Mexican Sister
Adelpha fessonia is a brush-footed butterfly in the family Nymphalidae, commonly known as the band-celled sister or Mexican sister. The species occurs from Panama northward through Central America to Mexico, with periodic vagrant populations establishing in the lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas. Adults have a wingspan of 56–70 mm. The species exhibits partial migration patterns, with Texas populations representing temporary rather than permanent residents.
Apodemia walkeri
Walker's Metalmark
Apodemia walkeri, commonly known as Walker's metalmark, is a butterfly species in the family Riodinidae. It was first described by Frederick DuCane Godman and Osbert Salvin in 1886. The species occurs from north-western Costa Rica northward through Mexico, with occasional vagrancy to the lower Rio Grande Valley in southern Texas.
Dione
silverspot butterflies
Dione is a genus of butterflies in the subfamily Heliconiinae, family Nymphalidae, distributed from the southern United States through Central America to South America. Species in this genus are commonly known as silverspot butterflies due to the distinctive silver spots on the ventral wing surfaces. The genus includes at least two recognized species: Dione moneta (Mexican Silverspot) and Dione juno (Juno Silverspot or Juno Longwing). Adults are medium-sized butterflies with elongated wings and are frequently observed visiting flowers for nectar. Larvae feed on passion vines (Passiflora species).
Dione moneta
Mexican silverspot
Dione moneta, commonly known as the Mexican silverspot, is a butterfly in the family Nymphalidae, subfamily Heliconiinae. Its normal range extends from Mexico through Central America to Brazil, with occasional strays northward into the southern United States. The species is named after the Roman goddess Moneta, representing fortune and wealth. A notable vagrant record occurred in Colorado in April 2017, representing a significant northward extension of its documented range.
Dryadula phaetusa
Banded Orange Heliconian, Banded Orange, Orange Tiger
Dryadula phaetusa, the sole species in its genus, is a Neotropical heliconiine butterfly recognizable by its bold orange and black banded wing pattern. It ranges from Brazil to central Mexico, with occasional summer vagrants reaching central Florida. The species exhibits sexual dimorphism in color intensity and participates in Müllerian mimicry complexes due to its unpalatability to birds.
Hodebertia
Hodebertia is a monotypic genus of crambid moths erected by Leraut in 2003. Its sole species, Hodebertia testalis, is a tropical micro-moth with occasional vagrant records in Europe. The genus is notable for its distinctive wing pattern and larval association with milkweed relatives and hibiscus.
Hodebertia testalis
Incolorous Pearl
Hodebertia testalis, known as the Incolorous Pearl, is a small crambid moth found primarily in tropical regions with occasional vagrant records reaching parts of Europe. It is the sole species in its genus, making Hodebertia monotypic. The species was first described by Fabricius in 1794 and has undergone taxonomic reclassification, with some sources placing it in the genus Pyrausta.
Orthonama obstipata
Gem, Gem Moth
Orthonama obstipata, known as the Gem, is a cosmopolitan moth in the family Geometridae. The species exhibits strong sexual dimorphism in wing coloration and pattern. It is noted for its vagrant behavior and ability to cross open water, leading to regular though irregular occurrences on islands including the British Isles and Iceland.
Papilio ornythion
ornythion swallowtail
Papilio ornythion is a swallowtail butterfly in the subfamily Papilioninae, native to Mexico and Guatemala with occasional vagrancy into the southern United States. The species exhibits sexual dimorphism with two female forms—one matching the male and a distinctive dark form. Adults fly from April to September with two generations per year. Larvae feed on Citrus leaves while adults nectar on flowers.
Pentodontini
rhinoceros beetles
Pentodontini is the most diverse tribe within the subfamily Dynastinae (rhinoceros beetles), containing over 100 genera distributed across multiple biogeographic regions. Most genera are restricted to a single biogeographic region. The tribe is characterized by substantial morphological diversity, with generic-level identification often relying on mouthpart morphology in females and secondary sexual characters (horns, claw modifications, antennal club length) in males.

Large Orange Sulphur, Orange Giant Sulphur
A medium to large sulphur butterfly of the family Pieridae, ranging from Peru through Central America and the Caribbean to the southern United States. Adults display bright orange upperwings with variable dark marginal markings. The species exhibits strong flight and is frequently observed visiting flowers in open, disturbed habitats. It has been introduced to Hawaii and occasionally strays northward well beyond its core range.
Strephonota tephraeus
Pearly-gray Hairstreak
Strephonota tephraeus is a small lycaenid butterfly with a wingspan of 22–29 mm, commonly known as the Pearly-gray Hairstreak. The species ranges from Mexico through Central America to the Amazon basin and northern South America, with rare vagrant records in southern Texas. It inhabits lowland tropical forests, particularly riparian corridors, and exhibits multivoltine breeding in Mexico with adults active from May through December.
