Carnidae
bird flies, filth flies
Carnidae is a family of small flies (Diptera) comprising six genera and approximately 93 species worldwide. Most species are saprophagous, with larvae developing in bird nest litter, dung, carrion, and decaying organic matter. Members of the genus Carnus are exceptional within the family, being haematophagous ectoparasites of nestling birds. Adults are typically 1–2 mm, black, and characterized by distinctive arrangements of orbital setae on the frons.
Chalcosyrphus libo
Long-haired Leafwalker
Chalcosyrphus libo is an uncommon species of syrphid fly known by the common name Long-haired Leafwalker. It is characterized by an all-black body without the steel blue highlights seen in related species or the red abdominal markings present in congeners. The species exhibits notably enlarged and ventrally spinose metafemora with correspondingly curved tibiae, features whose function remains unclear but may relate to substrate interaction on woody surfaces. Adults are associated with dead and decaying wood, where females oviposit and larvae develop as saprophages. The species has been observed in north-central North America.
Chalcosyrphus plesia
Black-hipped Leafwalker
Chalcosyrphus plesia, known as the black-hipped leafwalker, is an uncommon syrphid fly found in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. The species is a documented mimic of the digger wasp Sphex nudus. Unlike many syrphids that hover at flowers, this species exhibits behavioral and morphological adaptations associated with dead wood habitats. The specific epithet "plesia" and common name "black-hipped leafwalker" refer to distinctive dark coloration on the posterior body region.
Lacinipolia incurva
Lacinipolia incurva is a small owlet moth in the family Noctuidae, described by John B. Smith in 1888. The species is restricted to the southwestern United States and adjacent regions of Mexico, with records from California, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, and Colorado. Adults have a wingspan of approximately 25 mm. The larvae are known to feed on dead leaves of Quercus hypoleucoides (silverleaf oak), indicating a detritivorous or saprophagous feeding strategy rather than typical herbivory on living plant tissue.
Liothorax
Liothorax is a genus of scarab beetles in the subfamily Aphodiinae, historically treated as a subgenus of Aphodius. Species are characterized by elongate, parallel-sided to hemicylindrical bodies and distinctive head morphology lacking tubercles on the frontoclypeal suture. The genus comprises at least 16 Palaearctic species divided into niger and plagiatus species groups, plus additional species in the Nearctic and Neotropical regions. Recent revisions have used chromosomal analysis and molecular phylogenetics to clarify species boundaries.
Neriidae
cactus flies, banana stalk flies, banana flies
Neriidae is a family of true flies (Diptera) comprising approximately 100 species in 19 genera. Formerly treated as a subfamily of Micropezidae, Neriidae are distinguished by their unreduced fore legs. Adults are slender, long-legged flies with elongated bodies and heads, particularly in males. The family exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism and is notable for spectacular male combat behavior. Neriidae are primarily tropical in distribution, with limited representation in temperate regions of North America and Australia.
Palloptera
flutter flies
Palloptera is a genus of flutter flies (Diptera: Pallopteridae) containing approximately 30–33 described species. Adults are characterized by rapid, trembling wing movements. Larval feeding modes vary: most species are saprophagous, feeding on biofilms on plant surfaces, while at least one species (P. scutellata) is phytophagous, developing inside rush stems. The genus occurs primarily in Europe, though adult detection is challenging and distributions are likely underestimated.
Pallopteridae
flutter-wing flies, trembling-wing flies, waving-wing flies
Pallopteridae is a small family of acalyptrate flies comprising approximately 70 species across 15 genera, distributed primarily in temperate regions of both Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Adults are recognized by their characteristic wing vibration behavior, which produces the common names flutter-wing, trembling-wing, or waving-wing flies. The family exhibits diverse larval feeding strategies including saprophagy, phytophagy, and occasional zoophagy, with larvae developing in flowerheads, stems, and other plant tissues.
Pentodontini
rhinoceros beetles
Pentodontini is the most diverse tribe within the subfamily Dynastinae (rhinoceros beetles), containing over 100 genera distributed across multiple biogeographic regions. Most genera are restricted to a single biogeographic region. The tribe is characterized by substantial morphological diversity, with generic-level identification often relying on mouthpart morphology in females and secondary sexual characters (horns, claw modifications, antennal club length) in males.

Tropidiina is a subtribe of hoverflies (family Syrphidae) containing 11 genera. Recent phylogenetic studies indicate it is sister to the tribe Eristalini, revealing that Milesiini as currently defined is polyphyletic. Members are characterized by a thickened hind femur and a body that narrows progressively from rear to head. The subtribe has broad geographic distribution with highest diversity in the Americas and Europe.
