Acanthocephala declivis
Giant leaf-footed bug
Acanthocephala declivis is the largest species in its genus across its North American range, reaching 28–34 mm in length. Males possess dramatically enlarged, leaf-like hind tibiae used in aggressive combat with rival males and courtship displays toward females. The species exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism in hind leg morphology, with females retaining slender, unmodified legs. It occurs from the southern United States through Central America to El Salvador and Guatemala, with a subspecies A. d. guatemalana described from Guatemala.
Chymomyza
Chymomyza is a genus of vinegar flies in the family Drosophilidae, containing approximately 60 described species distributed across multiple continents. Species within this genus exhibit diverse ecological specializations, including mycophagy (fungal spore feeding) and exploitation of damaged or parasitized fruits and nuts. Some species, such as C. amoena, have demonstrated invasive potential, establishing populations in Europe from North American origins. The genus is notable for complex male-male combat behaviors involving modified forelegs used as visual signals and physical weapons.
Corydalus texanus
Western Dobsonfly
Corydalus texanus is a large megaloopteran insect commonly known as the Western Dobsonfly. Adults are among the largest winged insects in their range, with males distinguished by elongated sickle-shaped mandibles used in combat with rivals. Females possess shorter but powerful jaws capable of delivering a painful bite. The aquatic larval stage, known as hellgrammites, are predaceous and serve as important indicators of stream health. Adults are attracted to lights and may be observed near water bodies at night.
Gnatocerus maxillosus
flour beetle
Gnatocerus maxillosus is a species of darkling beetle in the family Tenebrionidae. It is a stored product pest commonly associated with grain and flour storage facilities. The species is known for its distinctive enlarged mandibles in males, which function as weapons in male-male combat. It has been documented from several European countries including France, Italy, and Albania, as well as the Canary Islands.
Leptoglossus
leaf-footed bugs
Leptoglossus is a genus of true bugs in the leaf-footed bug family Coreidae, tribe Anisoscelini. Species are characterized by leaflike dilations of the hind tibia, a diagnostic trait of the genus. The genus is distributed throughout the Americas, with some introduced populations in Europe and Asia. Several species are economically significant agricultural pests, notably L. occidentalis, which has become invasive in multiple continents.

cactus flies, banana stalk flies, banana flies
Neriidae is a family of true flies (Diptera) comprising approximately 100 species in 19 genera. Formerly treated as a subfamily of Micropezidae, Neriidae are distinguished by their unreduced fore legs. Adults are slender, long-legged flies with elongated bodies and heads, particularly in males. The family exhibits pronounced sexual dimorphism and is notable for spectacular male combat behavior. Neriidae are primarily tropical in distribution, with limited representation in temperate regions of North America and Australia.
Onthophagus hecate blatchleyi
Scooped Scarab
Onthophagus hecate blatchleyi is a small dung beetle subspecies in the family Scarabaeidae, recognized as a regional variant of the Scooped Scarab. Males possess a distinctive broad, forked horn projecting from the thorax, which they use in combat for mating rights. The species has been documented visiting both dung and carrion, including bird carcasses and cattle feces. Research indicates populations are vulnerable to certain livestock parasiticides, particularly those with persistent residues in dung.
Rhaphidophoridae
cave crickets, camel crickets, spider crickets, cave wētā, sand treaders, sprickets
Rhaphidophoridae is a globally distributed family of wingless orthopterans comprising over 500 described species. Commonly called cave crickets, camel crickets, or spider crickets, these insects are characterized by elongated antennae, enlarged hind legs adapted for jumping, and a humpbacked body profile. They occupy diverse habitats including caves, forests, animal burrows, and human structures. All species are flightless and nocturnal, relying heavily on tactile and chemical sensory structures for navigation in dark environments. The family includes notable subfamilies such as Ceuthophilinae in North America, Macropathinae in the Southern Hemisphere, and Aemodogryllinae in Asia.
