Foundress

  • Polistes jokahamae

    Dark-waisted Paper Wasp

*Polistes jokahamae* is a primitively eusocial paper wasp in the subfamily Polistinae. Verified records are concentrated in East Asia and nearby Pacific islands, although database records also include other regions and should not be treated as a complete range map. Species-specific studies have examined its colony reproduction and seasonal caste development. In one study, queens maintained reproductive priority without being the most aggressive colony members.

  • Polistes snelleni

    Japanese paper wasp

Polistes snelleni is a social paper wasp in the genus Polistes, documented from East Asian occurrence records. A long-running survey in Sapporo found that nearly all sampled pre-emergence colonies had a single foundress. Research on orphaned colonies also documents an unusual reproductive route: workers can mate and produce female offspring after the queen is absent.
