Choristoneura pinus
jack pine budworm, Jack Pine Budworm Moth
Choristoneura pinus, the jack pine budworm, is a tortricid moth native to North American jack pine forests. First described by Freeman in 1953, this species undergoes periodic population outbreaks that defoliate Pinus banksiana stands across Canada and the northern United States. Larval survival depends critically on the availability of pollen cones during spring dispersal. The species exhibits lagged density-dependent dynamics with its host tree, contributing to outbreak cycles of 6–12 year intervals.
Dicerca lugubris
Dicerca lugubris is a jewel beetle species in the family Buprestidae, described by John Lawrence LeConte in 1860. It is characterized by dark metallic coloration and moderate size among its congeners. The species has been recorded from scattered localities across northern and central North America, with documented association with jack pine (Pinus banksiana). Like other members of the genus Dicerca, it is a woodboring beetle whose larvae develop in dead or dying trees.
Dioryctria banksiella
Dioryctria banksiella is a species of snout moth in the family Pyralidae, described in 1969 from Canadian specimens. The larvae develop within galls formed by the western gall rust fungus (Cronartium harknessii) on jack pine (Pinus banksiana) trunks. Early instars feed on gall tissue beneath the bark, while later instars mine deeper into the gall. The species is known only from western and central Canada.
Exenterus amictorius
Exenterus amictorius is an ichneumonid parasitoid wasp introduced to North America that attacks sawfly larvae (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae), particularly during the pre-spinning eonymph stage. The species exhibits adaptive host discrimination behavior that changes during the host's spinning period, lacks discrimination initially but rapidly acquires and maintains this ability. It shows strong positive density-dependent responses to host abundance and has established successfully on multiple diprionid hosts across North America. In multiparasitism situations with the native E. diprionis, E. amictorius consistently survives due to faster larval development.

virginianus
Neodiprion virginianus is a conifer sawfly (Hymenoptera: Diprionidae) that feeds on jack pine (Pinus banksiana). It is part of a species complex with variable taxonomy. The species has been documented causing localized defoliation outbreaks in northeastern North America, with populations capable of sudden collapse. Larvae are gregarious folivores that consume pine needles.
Rhyacionia granti
Jack Pine Shoot Borer
Rhyacionia granti is a species of tortricid moth in the family Tortricidae, described by Miller in 1985. It belongs to the genus Rhyacionia, a group commonly known as shoot borers or tip moths that are associated with coniferous trees. The species is known by the common name Jack Pine Shoot Borer, indicating its association with jack pine (Pinus banksiana). As a member of the Olethreutinae subfamily and Eucosmini tribe, it shares characteristics with other conifer-feeding tortricids in the genus.
Zale metatoides
Washed-out Zale Moth, Jack Pine False Looper
Zale metatoides is a moth species in the family Erebidae, first described by James Halliday McDunnough in 1943. It is commonly known as the Washed-out Zale or Jack Pine False Looper. The species inhabits barrens and pine woodlands across eastern North America, with a single generation per year. Adults have a wingspan of approximately 35 mm.
