Amblyscirtes hegon
pepper-and-salt skipper
Amblyscirtes hegon, commonly known as the pepper-and-salt skipper, is a small grass-feeding skipper butterfly native to eastern and central North America. It is distinguished by its relatively early spring flight period and association with grassy habitats. The species has a single generation per year and is mostly absent from coastal plain regions within its range.
Boloria selene
Small Pearl-bordered Fritillary, Eurasian Silver-bordered Fritillary, Silver-bordered Fritillary
Boloria selene is a medium-sized fritillary butterfly with a trans-Eurasian and North American distribution. The species exhibits complex population dynamics including bivoltine life cycles with distinct behavioral and developmental differences between spring and summer generations. In Europe it is known as the small pearl-bordered fritillary; in North America it is called the silver-bordered fritillary. The species serves as a grassland habitat indicator and has been extensively studied in the context of conservation management including prescribed fire and grazing regimes.

Piglet Bugs
Caliscelidae is a family of planthoppers in the superfamily Fulgoroidea, recognized as a distinct family based on 2013 molecular phylogenetic studies that separated it from Issidae. Members are small sap-sucking insects with marked sexual dimorphism in some species. The family includes approximately 250 described species across three subfamilies: Caliscelinae, Ommatidiotinae, and Peltonotellini. Some genera exhibit unusual morphological specializations, including ant-mimicking males in Formiscurra and the distinctive ball-shaped rostrum in Fitchiella robertsonii.
Cupido amyntula
Western Tailed-Blue
Cupido amyntula, commonly known as the Western Tailed-Blue, is a small butterfly in the family Lycaenidae found across western North America. Males display blue upperside wing coloration while females are darker brown with a brown band on the outer wing. The species has a wingspan of 2.2 to 2.9 cm and is distinguished from similar species by the presence of tail-like projections on the hindwings.
Diplolepis spinosa
many-spined twig gall wasp
Diplolepis spinosa is a cynipid gall wasp native to North America that induces large, conspicuous, multichambered stem galls on wild and domestic roses. The species has been documented on Rosa blanda, Rosa acicularis, and Rosa rugosa, and has recently become established on domestic roses in central Canada. Its galls are among the most visible in grassland habitats across the continent. The wasp exhibits complex gall development involving eggs deposited in slits between leaf primordia near bud tips, with larvae inducing separate chambers within spherical stem galls.
Polyommatus
blue butterflies
Polyommatus is a genus of blue butterflies in the family Lycaenidae, distributed across the Palearctic realm. Recent molecular studies have redefined its boundaries, with former subgenera Cyaniris, Lysandra, and Neolysandra now recognized as separate genera. Some authors continue to recognize additional subgenera including Agrodiaetus, Bryna, Meleageria, and Plebicula. The genus contains species of conservation concern, including critically endangered and vulnerable taxa with specific habitat requirements.
Thesium
Rootthugs
Thesium is a genus of hemiparasitic flowering plants in the family Santalaceae, with approximately 325 species distributed primarily across Africa, Europe, and Asia. The genus is particularly diverse in South Africa, where roughly half of all species occur. Species in this genus are root hemiparasites that form haustorial connections to host plant roots. The genus has undergone taxonomic revision, with several segregate genera (Austroamericium, Chrysothesium, Kunkeliella, Thesidium) now subsumed within Thesium.
