Ocyptamus is a large and diverse of hoverflies ( Syrphidae) comprising over 200 , predominantly distributed in the Neotropical region. The genus is not monophyletic and is with respect to Eosalpingogaster and Toxomerus; several subgenera have been elevated to full generic status (Hybobathus, Pelecinobaccha, Orphnabaccha, Pseudoscaeva). Many species await formal description, while others are likely to be synonymized upon further study.

Identification
Ocyptamus can be distinguished from the similar Pseudodoros by the presence of at least faint dark markings on the wings, often appearing as a bold leading edge. They differ from Baccha, another similar genus, in lacking distinctly banded abdominal patterns found in at least some Baccha species. Species-level identification within Ocyptamus is challenging and often requires examination of lateral and thoracic characters not visible in standard photographs.

Similar Taxa
- PseudodorosSimilar body form and -mimicking appearance; distinguished by Ocyptamus having dark wing markings (at minimum a bold leading edge) which Pseudodoros lacks
- BacchaSimilar slender, -mimicking ; at least some Baccha have distinctly banded not typical of Ocyptamus
- ToxomerusHistorically included within or closely related to Ocyptamus; Ocyptamus is with respect to Toxomerus, requiring careful examination of wing venation and genitalia for separation

Taxonomic instability
The is undergoing significant revision. Five new genera were proposed in 2020 for orphaned lineages within Ocyptamus. Users of taxonomic literature should verify whether recent treatments have transferred to other genera.
Undescribed diversity
Many remain undescribed, and numerous described species are expected to be synonymized. Current species count estimates are provisional.
