Appearance

Extremely small body size, comparable to a grain of wheat. Members of this are among the smallest bark beetles. Specific morphological characters distinguishing Eidophelus from related genera have been established through recent taxonomic revision based on molecular and morphological data.

Associated with bark of woody plants, consistent with bark beetle . Specific associations for the have not been documented in available sources.

Distribution

Specific geographic range not documented in available sources. The has been recorded in scientific collections and taxonomic literature.

Ecological Role

Functions as a bark beetle, participating in decomposition of woody plant material and nutrient cycling in forest . Specific ecological impacts have not been quantified.

Similar Taxa

  • HypothenemusFormerly classified in the same tribe Cryphalini; both are extremely small pygmy borers, but Hypothenemus contains economically important such as the (H. hampei) and the erudite pygmy borer (H. eruditus)
  • CryphalusFormerly in the same tribe Cryphalini; similar minute size and bark beetle habitus, now placed in separate tribe following taxonomic revision
  • ErnoporusFormerly in the same tribe Cryphalini; comparable tiny size, illustrated alongside Eidophelus for size comparison in taxonomic literature

More Details

Taxonomic Revision

Eidophelus was formerly classified in the tribe Cryphalini, which has been completely revised based on 120 target-capture and extensive morphological analysis. The former Cryphalini has been split into three new tribes, with Eidophelus placed in one of these newly erected tribes. This represents the most significant bark beetle reclassification since the 1980s catalogs of Wood and Bright.

Size Reference

Eidophelus darwini has been photographed alongside a grain of wheat and five other tiny bark beetle (, Hypothenemus eruditus, Trypodendron domesticum, Ernoporus parvulus, and Cryphalus dorsalis) to illustrate the extremely small size of these insects.
