Tibellus is a of active-hunting spiders in the Philodromidae, commonly called slender crab spiders. They are characterized by elongated, flattened bodies with longitudinal stripes that provide camouflage on grasses and vegetation. Unlike web-building spiders, they pursue prey directly on low vegetation. The genus contains 51 recognized distributed across Eurasia, Africa, the Americas, and Australia. range from 4–15 mm in body length.

Identification
Distinguished from similar-appearing spiders by: more flattened body profile compared to the robust, hairier nursery web spiders (Pisaurina); more slender build than Thanatus, which hunts primarily on the ground rather than on stems and leaves; lacks the very long leg spines and scrunched posture of lynx spiders (Oxyopes); more flattened facial profile compared to the longer '' of lynx spiders. The combination of elongated body, equal-length legs stretched along vegetation, and longitudinal stripes is diagnostic.

Habitat
Epigeal on low vegetation, grasses, foliage, and herbaceous plants. Found on stems, stalks, grass blades, and leaves rather than on the ground surface. Occupies disturbed habitats including vacant lots, lawns, forest edges, and open fields.
Distribution
Widespread across Eurasia, Africa, the Americas, and Australia. Specific regional records include: Afrotropical region (17+ ), North America (7 species north of Mexico), Bangladesh, Paraguay, and throughout the Holarctic ecozone. GBIF records from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Vermont (USA), and other US locations.
Life Cycle
Females construct flattened that they guard until spiderlings emerge. Maternal guarding has been observed.
Behavior
Active hunter that does not build webs for prey capture; lies in ambush on vegetation with legs stretched out along stems or leaves, relying on camouflage. Pursues prey directly rather than using webs. Remains motionless when disturbed, even when grass blades are manipulated.
Human Relevance
Harmless to humans; not known to bite. Occasionally encountered in domestic settings such as porches and basements. Presence indicates healthy diversity in disturbed . Useful subject for citizen science observation and photography due to accessible habitats.
Similar Taxa
- Pisaurina (nursery web spiders)Similar striped pattern and resting posture, but more robust and hairier body, different arrangement, and typically larger size ( 10.5–16.5 mm)
- ThanatusAlso in Philodromidae with similar size, but more robust build, different stripe pattern, and ground-dwelling habit versus stem-dwelling in Tibellus
- Oxyopes salticus (Striped Lynx Spider)Similar ambush posture on grass stems, but has very long leg spines, more scrunched posture, and longer facial profile
- Tetragnathidae (long-jawed orb weavers)Superficially similar elongated body form, but build orb webs and have different arrangement and leg proportions

Taxonomic History
Originally considered a within Thomisidae (sedentary crab spiders) before recognition as distinct Philodromidae. Tibellinus Simon, 1910, has been synonymized with Tibellus.
Venom Research
Tibellus oblongus venom contains a novel insectotoxin (Tbo-IT2) with an unusual 5-disulfide inhibitor cystine knot fold, showing insecticidal activity against housefly larvae but no activity on tested neuronal receptors.
Species Diversity
As of 2025, the includes 51 and two , with recent taxonomic revisions adding new species from the Afrotropical region and Bangladesh.
