A taxonomic revision by Troubridge (2008) realigned the genus within the tribe Psaphidini of the Amphipyrinae. Formerly placed species have been reassigned to other genera, such as Sympistis.

Troubridge (2008) conducted a major generic realignment of the Oncocnemidini Hodges (1983), placing Oxycnemis in Psaphidini (Amphipyrinae). The Oxycnemis erratica Barnes & McDunnough, 1913 was synonymized with O. grandimacula Barnes & McDunnough, 1910.
