Human Relevance

Several within Aphidini contain major agricultural pests. Aphis gossypii (cotton aphid) and Aphis fabae (black bean aphid) cause direct feeding damage and transmit plant viruses to crops. Rhopalosiphum padi (bird cherry-oat aphid) is a principal of barley yellow dwarf virus in cereal crops. Hyalopterus pruni (mealy plum aphid) infests stone fruits. The economic impact of these drives extensive research on and strategies.
