Flightless ground beetle with reduced hindwings. The nominate C. r. ruficollis ranges from Mendocino County, California to Baja California and southern Arizona. Subspecies C. r. grandicollis occurs from southwestern British Columbia to Humboldt County, California. Subspecies C. r. ignicollis is found in eastern Washington, western Idaho, and south to central California including the Sierra Nevada.
