Members are classified as shredder-detritivores, playing a significant role in leaf litter decomposition in lotic systems.

The genus was established by Martynov in 1909 with Pseudostenophylax fumosus as the type species. Research on Japanese species has revealed strong phylogeographic patterns linked to mountain formation and glacial history.
