It was described by August Busck in 1900 from specimens collected in Palm Beach, Florida. Taxonomic history

First described by August Busck in 1900. Ron Hodges placed it in Coleophoridae in 1983, then moved it to Batrachedrinae of Batrachedridae in 1999. Heikkilä et al. (2014) reclassified the Homaledra to Pterolonchidae based on cladistic analysis.
