The species is distributed across the Americas, with records from North America, Middle America, and South America. Two are recognized: the nominate Sphex flavovestitus flavovestitus and Sphex flavovestitus saussurei. Like other members of the Sphex, it is a solitary that constructs subterranean nests provisioned with paralyzed prey for its larvae.
