Palaeoneura can be distinguished from related by the combination of patterns and antennal structure. The genus is characterized by reduced wing venation typical of the , with having a relatively simple pattern. Identification to species level requires examination of microscopic characters including antennal proportions, measurements, and body proportions. The genus resembles Acmopolynema and Xenopolynema but differs in specific antennal and genitalic characters.
