Necydalis is a of longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) established by Linnaeus in 1758. The genus is distributed primarily across the Oriental and Palaearctic realms, with some in the Nearctic. North American species have been reclassified into four subgenera: Neodalis and Heterodalis ( Nearctic), Mesodalis and Necydalisca (also Palearctic). The genus includes both extant and fossil species, with a new Taiwanese species described in 2023 representing the first discovery in that region in nearly half a century.

Identification

Necydalis are characterized by their distinctive within the Cerambycidae. The has undergone recent taxonomic revision in North America, with species now allocated to four subgenera based on morphological features including male terminalia. Species identification requires examination of detailed morphological characters, particularly male genitalia structures. The Necydalis ulmi group comprises species sharing specific morphological characteristics found in East Asia.

Distribution

Primarily Oriental and Palaearctic realms; includes North America with subgenera showing different distributions: Neodalis and Heterodalis are to the Nearctic, while Mesodalis and Necydalisca occur in both Nearctic and Palearctic regions. Specific distribution records include Taiwan, Nevada (USA), and Scandinavian countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden).

Taxonomic Reclassification

North American were removed from the nominotypical subgenus and reallocated into four subgenera: Neodalis (new, Nearctic), Heterodalis (new, endemic Nearctic), Mesodalis (new, also Palearctic), and Necydalisca Plavilstshikov, 1936 (also Palearctic). This reclassification was based on detailed morphological analysis including male terminalia.

Recent Discoveries

A new from Taiwan was described in 2023, the first new Taiwanese species of this discovered in nearly 50 years. The species was placed in the Necydalis ulmi group based on morphological affinities with seven related species.
