Appalachia arcana is a short-winged grasshopper to Michigan, United States. It is the only restricted entirely to this state. The species is flightless and does not produce sound. Breeding occurs in September. It inhabits sphagnum bogs surrounded by jack pine trees.

Identification

Distinguished by its short wings (rendering it flightless), red undersides of the , and restriction to Michigan bogs. The combination of flightlessness, lack of song, and specific bog separates it from other Melanoplinae grasshoppers in the region.

Appearance

Short-winged grasshopper. Male brownish gray with a stripe down the back. Both sexes have with red undersides.

Habitat

Sphagnum bogs surrounded by jack pine (Pinus banksiana) trees. Requires wetland conditions with acidic peat moss substrate.
