Taxonomic History

The type of Oecophora was initially designated as Tinea sulphurella Fabricius, 1777, but this name is a junior homonym of Tinea sulphurella Fabricius, 1775 (now Esperia sulphurella). The species Fabricius described in 1777 was actually Tinea bractella Linnaeus, 1758, which had been transferred to Alabonia by subsequent authors. This complex nomenclatural history delayed correct type species determination.
