Symmetrischema is a of gelechiid moths established by Povolný in 1967. The genus includes economically significant agricultural pests, most notably the Andean potato tuber moth (S. tangolias), which causes severe postharvest losses to stored potatoes in highland regions. Some exhibit specialized feeding strategies, including the ability to induce parthenocarpic fruit development in plants. The genus occurs across the Americas with at least one species introduced to Oceania.

Distribution
Native to the Americas; S. tangolias distributed across Andean highlands of Peru, Ecuador, Bolivia, Chile, and Colombia, with introduced in North America (USA: California, Louisiana, Mississippi, Washington; Mexico), Asia (Indonesia), and Oceania (Australia: New South Wales, Tasmania, Victoria; New Zealand). S. lavernella occurs on Physalis in North America. S. dulce associated with chili pepper in Neotropical regions.
Human Relevance
S. tangolias (Andean potato tuber moth) is a major pest of global agricultural importance, causing severe postharvest losses in potato storage systems and threatening food security in Andean smallholder farming systems. Larval tunneling in tubers facilitates secondary , leading to complete loss of commercial value. S. dulce causes significant yield losses in chili pepper production.

- Phthorimaea operculellaAlso a potato tuber moth in Gelechiidae; S. tangolias is more cold-adapted with optimal development at 17-21°C versus 25-30°C for P. operculella, allowing S. tangolias to dominate in cooler highland regions.
- Tecia solanivoraAnother gelechiid potato pest; distinguished by geographic distribution and morphological features of larvae and .
