Genus Guides

19

Limosininae is a of lesser dung flies (Sphaeroceridae) within the order Diptera. The subfamily comprises numerous distributed across the New World and Pacific regions, with many associated with decaying organic matter and specialized microhabitats. Several genera have been described or revised in recent taxonomic work, including Aptilotella, Phthitia, Albistyla, Helicosina, Stipulosina, and Bregmosina. Species within this subfamily exhibit diverse morphological adaptations, with some showing strong associations with specific plant substrates such as bamboo stipules, furled Heliconia leaves, and treefall rich in green leaf litter.

Identification

Members of Limosininae can be distinguished from other Sphaeroceridae by combinations of the following characters: presence of cruciate interfrontal bristles (arranged in an X-shaped pattern), specific wing venation including ending at the tip of R4+5, and modified male genitalia structures. Some exhibit distinctive features such as swollen hind (Helicosina), broad with swollen and large (Bregmosina), or distinctive white surstyli with broad (Albistyla). Male sternite 5 is frequently modified and serves as an important diagnostic character at the genus level.

Habitat

vary considerably among and . Documented associations include: treefalls and habitats rich in green leaf litter (Albistyla, Bregmosina); furled Heliconia leaves (Helicosina); and stipules of the Andean bamboo Chusquea scandens (Stipulosina). These microhabitat specializations suggest many species occupy ephemeral, decaying plant matter in forest understories.

Distribution

Primarily Neotropical, with extensions into the Pacific region. Documented from Rica, Panama, Ecuador, and other Central and South American localities. Some such as Phthitia include Pacific island .
