Ephydrini is a tribe of shore flies (Diptera: Ephydridae) comprising nine and 33 in the Neotropical region. The tribe includes both temperate Northern Hemisphere genera (Setacera, Cirrula, Dimecoenia, Paracoenia, Ephydra) and exclusively Neotropical genera (Austrocoenia, Notiocoenia, Paraephydra, Neoephydra). Species-level identification relies heavily on male terminalia characters due to morphological similarity among species.

Identification

within Ephydrini are frequently difficult to separate morphologically; male terminalia characters are generally required for definitive species identification. The nine constituent are distinguished by relatively stable morphological characters. Austrocoenia and Notiocoenia were previously classified in tribe Scatellini. Two genera, Paraephydra and Neoephydra, were recently described from the Neotropics.

Distribution

Neotropical region; Americas south of the United States. Five (Setacera, Cirrula, Dimecoenia, Paracoenia, Ephydra) are primarily temperate and distributed mainly in the Northern Hemisphere. Four genera are exclusively Neotropical: Austrocoenia, Notiocoenia, Paraephydra, and Neoephydra. Neoephydra have been recorded from Chile, Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru.

Taxonomic history

Austrocoenia and Notiocoenia were transferred from Scatellini to Ephydrini. Two new , Paraephydra and Neoephydra, were described in this revision. Multiple new synonymies were established: Ephydra densepilosa = E. ciligena; Dimecoenia grumanni, D. lopesi = E. ciligena; D. coltaensis, D. carrerai = D. zurcheri; D. travassosi = E. prionoptera. A neotype was designated for E. caesia, and lectotypes were designated for E. chilensis, E. densepilosa, E. pravoneura, E. prionoptera, and D. zurcheri. Dimecoenia venteli is listed as .

New species described

Seven new Neoephydra were described: N. neotropica (Chile), N. dasycephala (Argentina, Peru), N. mallonota (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile), N. shewelli (Argentina, Bolivia, Chile), N. inca (Argentina, Bolivia, Peru), N. penai (Chile), and N. trichina (Argentina, Chile).
