The subfamily has a fossil record extending to the Cretaceous period, with Cretomanota gondwanica representing the oldest known Gondwanan leiine from the Aptian Crato Formation. Extant members are distributed across Afro-Oriental, Palearctic, and Australasian regions.

Fossil Record

Cretomanota gondwanica from the Aptian Crato Formation (Brazil) is the oldest known fossil of Leiinae and only the second Gondwanan fossil mycetophilid described. Alavamanota from Spanish amber are also assigned to this . These fossils support a Lower Cretaceous origin for the tribe Manotini in southern Gondwana.
