Brachyleptura brevis
Short Long-horned Beetle
Brachyleptura brevis is a flower longhorn beetle in the subfamily Lepturinae of the family Cerambycidae. The species is characterized by abbreviated elytra relative to other members of the genus, a trait referenced in its specific epithet "brevis" (short). It belongs to a group of diurnal cerambycids that visit flowers as adults. The species has been documented in North America, with records from Canada and the United States including Vermont.
Necydalinae
Necydalinae is a small subfamily of longhorn beetles (Cerambycidae) historically classified as a tribe within Lepturinae but now recognized as a distinct subfamily. The group is characterized by unusually short elytra for cerambycids, giving them a superficial resemblance to rove beetles (Staphylinidae). Most species are bee or wasp mimics. The subfamily contains only two genera: Necydalis (Europe, Asia, North America) and Ulochaetes (western North America).
Necydalis mellita
Slender Long-horned Beetle
Necydalis mellita is a longhorn beetle in the family Cerambycidae, characterized by its wasp-mimicking appearance. Adults are approximately 2 cm in length with antennae longer than the body. The species exhibits Batesian mimicry through its black and red coloration, elongate body, short elytra that expose the wings, and constricted pronotum. This morphological convergence with wasps likely provides protection from predators.
