Cliniodes is a of in the Crambidae, Odontiinae. First described by Achille Guenée in 1854, the genus was long synonymized with Idessa Walker but restored to validity through taxonomic revision. The genus contains approximately 30 described arranged into multiple subgenera and species groups, with distribution centered in the Neotropical region. Recent taxonomic work has clarified relationships with related genera including Metrea, Basonga, and Sobanga.

Identification

Cliniodes are distinguished from related odontiine by genitalic characters and wing pattern features. The genus was historically confused with Idessa Walker, from which it was separated based on detailed morphological study. Subgenera Procliniodes, Metrea, and Cliniodes are recognized based on structural differences; Metrea was restricted to a single species (C. ostreonalis) based on distinct . Species groups within Cliniodes (paradisalis, euphrosinalis, opalalis) are defined by shared wing patterns and genitalic characteristics. Accurate identification requires examination of male and female genitalia; superficial wing pattern similarity can lead to misidentification with related genera such as Basonga and Sobanga.

More Details

Taxonomic History

The has undergone extensive revision. Cliniodes was synonymized under Idessa Walker for much of the 20th century. Munroe's 1964 revision restored Cliniodes as valid, synonymized Idessa, and reorganized the group into subgenera. Hayden (2011) further refined the classification, describing new and establishing the subgenus Procliniodes.

Species Groups

The contains three recognized groups within subgenus Cliniodes: paradisalis (1 species), euphrosinalis (5 species), and opalalis (11 species), plus unplaced species. Subgenera Procliniodes and Metrea contain 3 and 1 species respectively.
