The was established by Jacob in 1820. A -group centered on Disphragis notabilis was revised by Sullivan & Pogue in 2014, resulting in the description of new species from Rica.

Species diversity

Approximately 137 are recognized, with ongoing taxonomic work. Selected species include Disphragis tharis (Stoll, 1780), one of the earliest described, and multiple species described by Miller in 2011.
