Taxonomic history

The was established by Grote in 1895 based on Copanarta aurea, originally described as Heliothis aurea in 1879. Copanarta nigerrima, described by Smith in 1903, was later synonymized with C. aurea. The second , C. sexpunctata, was added by Barnes and McDunnough in 1916.
