Identification

Distinguished from similar noctuids by the pronounced bicolored forewing pattern with clear demarcation between light band and darker basal and regions. Spring period helps separate from later-flying relatives.

Appearance

Wingspan 30–37 mm. Forewings display a distinct two-toned coloration, with darker basal and areas contrasting against a lighter band.

Distribution

Eastern and central North America: Nova Scotia to Virginia, westward to Texas and Manitoba.

Seasonality

active April to May.

Diet

Larvae have been reared on Prunus virginiana (chokecherry).
