Species were described between 1882 and 1949 by various lepidopterists including Grote, Hulst, Grossbeck, and McDunnough.

Fifteen are currently recognized: P. albida, P. artestata, P. desperata, P. discoidalis, P. emmedonia, P. gypsata, P. insipidata, P. irremorata, P. leucata, P. mellisa, P. ochrocarneata, P. opinata, P. protoptata, P. remorata, and P. tremorata. Several species were transferred from other or described as new by McDunnough in 1938 and 1949.
