Nephrotoma alterna is a large crane fly in the Tipulidae. It occurs across North America from Canada through the United States. The species was originally described by Francis Walker in 1848 under the basionym Tipula alterna. Like other members of the Nephrotoma, it is characterized by its substantial body size relative to many other crane flies.
