Species are frequently characterized by distinctive wing patterns, including brown spots on the wing and specific venation features used in taxonomic identification. The genus is divided into multiple subgenera and species groups based on morphological characters, particularly male genitalia and wing markings.

Identification

Members of Homoneura can be recognized by their small size and typically patterned wings, which often bear brown spots at specific locations including between the radial-medial crossvein (r-m) and spots on R4+5, dm-cu crossvein, and tips of R2+3, R4+5, and M1. Identification to level requires examination of male genitalia structures. Some species groups, such as the henanensis group and singularis group, are defined by consistent wing pattern morphologies.
