Identification
North divided into 12 species groups based on morphological examination of Nearctic, Neotropical, and Palearctic faunas. Diagnostic characters include male and female eighth abdominal and tergites, male , and other structural features. A diagnostic exists for all North American species except S. heathi.

America north of Mexico, with ranging from the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada through eastern North America, the southcentral United States, and the southwestern United States. The Palearctic species S. marshami has been reported from the Nearctic region. Additional distribution records include Scandinavia (Denmark, Norway, Sweden) and Colombia (Parque Nacional Natural Serranía de Chiribiquete).
