A rove beetle in the Staphylinidae, Tachyporinae. Formerly considered a synonym of S. bipustulatus but reinstated as a valid in a 1976 revision of North American Sepedophilus. One of thirty recognized species in the north of Mexico, placed in a species group based on morphological examination of Nearctic, Neotropical, and Palearctic faunas. Male and female eighth abdominal sternites and tergites, male genitalia, and other diagnostic characters have been illustrated for identification.
