Deinopteroloma is a of rove beetles (Staphylinidae: Omaliinae: Anthophagini) established by Jansson in 1946. The genus was transferred from Silphidae to Staphylinidae based on morphological evidence and is now classified within the Anthobium group of genera. occur in the Pacific Northwest of North America, the Nepal Himalayas, northeastern Burma, China (Sichuan, Yunnan), and northern Vietnam. The genus includes at least nine described species, with several new species described from China and Vietnam in 2016.

Identification

Members of this can be distinguished from related genera by their placement in the Anthobium group of genera within Omaliinae. -level identification requires examination of specific morphological characters detailed in taxonomic keys. The genus Mathrilaeum was synonymized with Deinopteroloma, so specimens previously identified under that name should be re-examined.

Habitat

Based on observations of D. subcostatum, at least some inhabit forested areas under wet wood debris and rotting leaves. Specific details for most species remain undocumented.

Distribution

Disjunct distribution across three regions: Pacific coast of North America (Pacific Northwest), Nepal Himalayas, northeastern Burma, and montane areas of China (Sichuan: Gongga Shan, Emei Shan; Yunnan: Dehong Dai and Jingpo Autonomous Prefecture) and northern Vietnam.

Similar Taxa

  • MathrilaeumJunior synonym of Deinopteroloma; previously treated as separate but shown to be congeneric based on morphological analysis.
  • SilphidaeDeinopteroloma was originally placed in this but transferred to Staphylinidae based on systematic revision; specimens may be misidentified in older collections.
  • AnthobiumBelongs to the same group within Omaliinae; morphological similarities require careful examination for correct generic assignment.

More Details

Taxonomic history

The was originally described in Silphidae in 1946. A major revision in 1985 transferred it to Staphylinidae (Omaliinae) and synonymized Mathrilaeum. The genus now contains transferred from Lathrimaeum (L. subcostatum, L. pictum, L. notabile) and several newly described species from Asia.

Species groups

Three groups have been identified within the based on morphological characters, though the specific diagnostic features defining these groups are not detailed in available sources.
