Phyllophaga hirticula

Phyllophaga hirticula is a of scarab beetle in the Scarabaeidae, one of over 400 species in the Phyllophaga found in North America. The species was originally described as Melolontha hirticula by Knoch in 1801. Two are recognized: P. h. hirticula and P. h. comosa. Like other May beetles, it is part of a large and taxonomically challenging genus where species identification often requires examination of genitalia.
