It is one of four valid Ellescus species in North America, where it occurs alongside the widespread E. ephippiatus, the west coast E. californicus, and the newly described E. michaeli. The species has been distinguished from using integrative combining morphological and molecular data.

Distinguished from other North Ellescus through integrative using morphological characters and molecular markers (CO1 and ITS2). CO1 failed to separate E. ephippiatus and E. michaeli, but ITS2 reliably distinguished these . A has been designated to stabilize .
